Puns certainly can be witty and wit can be punny. Sarcasm can also be witttingly punny. Here is an example quip from a master of wit: A woman once approached Winston Churchill at a party and stated, "Sir, if you were my husband I would poison that drink." Churchill quickly retorted, "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!"

That is a well known retort and contains no pun,  so I don't see the relevance.  Puns are easy, wit, as illustrated above, much more difficult.  A witty pun, now that is worth pundering.

But the Churchill retort bleeds sarcasm; and you stated earlier that sarcasm is a poor substitute for wit.

Now I know why I never finished that math minor in college lol... have a friend who was probably the first female math major at her college. Will try some sarcasm and ask if the posted theroms are true...
