I really hope this 'best practice' idea of sharing information about potential staff member problems catches on among the collective corps.

I also sincerely hope that drum corps can move on from this.  I believe it can, as many other organizations involved with youth are experiencing the same sort of period of reckoning, and everything can't just stop because bad people exist.

That would mean the perpetrators have won.

For those who haven't read it yet, the link goes to an op-ed in The Oregonian newspaper (Oregon Live website) by the president of O.C.'s board, Phil Marshall.

And a very interesting read considering the author and his part in this mess.

They said some of this before in previous press releases. Taking responsibility but insulting there is an elephant in the room.

"Stevens had been a contractor with the Crusaders until he was forced to resign in Nov. 2017" Why say he was a contractor and then in the rest of the release treat him like an employee.

We put Stevens on administrative leave within 24 hours and he was allowed to resign? Does indicating he was a contractor open him up for more liability than OC themselves? In business, a contractor bears more responsibility for their action than in-house employees do.

In other words, can OC or dci sue him for damaging the activity? If they can why aren't they doing it? I dealt with contractors they provide goods and services to a, in this case, an origination. However, they are not afforded HR treatment when they are no longer needed. No Administrative Leaves or resignations. Is this all fluff, just another puff piece?

Phil, why did pretty much the entire staff quit?  Why are you still there?

No real questions, this is the two-step, a dance around. A false reality. The DCP Zone where great idea's and direct questions are stored, for future generations to come.

That’s what some of the comments asked (why let him resign instead of fire). And the writer still talks like thanking the guy publicly after he left was the big problem. Ah no, hiring the guy and not canning him was it...

As an addendum to your comment The Academy hired Lisa Tatum (formerly Crusaders Brass Caption Head 2018) as their Brass Caption Head 2019.  It appears that she has brought with her at least five other Brass Instructors from the Crusaders.  Looks like a promising group overall and almost a complete overhaul for The Academy brass staff.  Some former BD, BC, Bloo and Trooper MM and affiliated instructors are included.  Have high hopes for the Forged in Heat crew for the 2019 season.
