if I am on the track and it sounds like there is an ensemble issue, i am going to very carefully defer the call to upstairs. Sound travels at different speeds.

A) The video link concerning count off shows why sound waves do not 'syncronize' front to back and back to front. B) Sound waves from a drum and sound waves from a trumpet both travel at the same speed going through the same atmospheric medium, so sound does not travel at different speeds. Basic physics on both items.

the same thing applies for standing right in front of the pit and trying to be sure they are perfectly in time with the battery who could be behind the back hash.

Physics. Go listen to the multitude of judges tapes on youtube....tell me how many you find addressing front to back issues at field level

Any two sound waves that are in sync traveling the same direction will stay in sync in that specific direction. Any two sound waves that are out of sync traveling in the same direction will also stay out of sync in that specific direction. Therefore if you are standing on the track in between the front ensemble and the press box, and if the sound waves from the battery are in sync with the sound waves from the front ensemble to you, they will stay in sync when they reach the press box. There is no way at all they will get out of sync going in the same direction. The converse of being out of sync to you then the press box is also true. Again basic physics.

And the staff would rightfully murder you in critique and protest to the caption head because you're discussing Ensemble issues on your sound file...

But as a perc judge if perc timing was an aspect on the perc sheet for me to adjudicate they would have no basis for the complaint.

let me know how many times he discusses ensemble timing addressed at field level.

I have heard stuff on that field that sounded off, and hearing judges recordings from upstairs sounded perfectly fine. why?

it's designed for up there. the field sheet is an IA sheet, a proficiency sheet, not an ensemble sheet. any field sheet that takes a more holistic approach is doing a disservice to the performers and staff

If you are on the field in between the pit and battery the sound waves should be out of timing sync to you and in sync to the box judge because the pit should lock into the sound movement direction of travel toward the box. That is why it is off to the field judge and in time to the box judge. However in no case will the sound be in sync to you and out of sync in the box, or out of sync to you and in sync at the box, if you are in the wave travel path in between the pit and the box. Neither you nor the judge in the box have the power to alter physics.

Wouldn't that only be true if the box were at ground level like the pit is?  With the box up high above the ground, it is not receiving the battery sound on the same line of travel as the pit is "locking" in on.

if you are on the track in front of them there is still no guarantee at field level it is perfectly in time. hence why no one i know of outside of you comments on ensemble timing from the field.

If you are in a pro or university stadium with a very very high press box at a rather severe angle then yes an issue would arise. That would also play havoc on the pit who are listening back. However, at the overwhelming number of hs shows, or even typical mid-week DCI shows at hs stadiums, the angle of line to the press box is not severe enough to make any human noticeable difference.
