From what I've heard, Carman Cluna wanted no part of DCI.

Brassmen had a great shot at making finals both those years if they had gone.

Yep... those were Hy's charts. Some of his finest work, IMO.

Smart man Carman..needed more like him.....

Thank you.

No problem! I remember seeing the corps practice at the U.S. Open that year and was just blown away!

This one is easy, and not even close IMO.

Geneseo Knights.  They dressed like the Vanguard and played like the Vanguard.   Thirteenth in 1983 with that fantastic Russlan and Ludmilla show.

They did not score or place like the Vanguard.  😞

Competed against the Knights many times in the 70s even going back to the Kewanee Knights.( they played tunes from Camelot a lot of those years - really pretty melodies ) They always seemed just on the cusp of some very good things. We had one of their guys instruct drums in '75 for a time who was also a medical intern at the time. He'd always get paged right in the middle of rehearsals and have to leave. I hadn't realized they placed so high in 83. Glad they found some success after all those years.

always a question whether Brassmen was another over-age candidate. Local priest sponsor (first St. Jos. Patron Church, then transferred to St. Rita's) just wanted the "kids" off the city streets into something positive. (I think Fr.'s early assignment was St. Rocco's, also Brooklyn.) Cluna knew his drill sgt. military style instruction (he also taught St. Ignatius) would wane once music educators were let into the room.

You could add....Les Eclipse, Squires (definitely), Marquis, Charioteers, Seneca Princemen, Gauchos, Precisionaires, Offensive Lions, probably a lot more!
