ThePlanets
1. 1988- the opener might keep this from being my overall favorite DCI show of all time...but Malaguena...wow. That's the best 5:15 in drum corps right there 2. 1975- classic. Guts and glory. 3. 2001- Hot Jazz Madison style. It got 11th place and is a completely overlooked and underrated show 4. 1995- for the fans. Oh I wish I was there. 5. 1997- who doesn't love a pirate adventure? 6. 1996- part 2 not as good as part 1 but still a heck of a show.
steelchops
In no particular order 1973- started the rise and jazz format first appearance of Ballet in Brass 1999 incredible ending 1996 - a mis abuelos sop solo pure power and guts 2013 Band of bros- loved the theme and music 1975 - lessons learned from 1974 helped bring this masterpiece 1988- Mello solo just one of many incredible moments 2001- best version of Ballet in Brasd- all 3 sips hit their screamer notes at the end Edited March 20, 2019 by steelchops Forgot something
BigW
Hmmm... in year order, no particular placement... 1975. I think one can make an argument that this might be the best or should thought of as the best "Traditional/Presentational" style show in DCI history, though I'm sure Vanguard fans might weigh in. Legendary in being undefeated, when that was way, way more of a special thing. 1980- The Jim Ott book, a HECKUVA 6th place corps. The last note and the halo on the release.... SWEEEEEEEEET. There were some good shows in the intervening gap... Dad would want me to plug '83 and '84 for "Cats". If Dad wants to do his own list... I know they would be on it. on to 1992... This City of Angels show was just a bit better mapped out, tons of kill-shots...and I would just find it hard to find someone who doesn't like "Funny".(I'm sure someone here prolly doesn't...) Total Drum Corps Arc Light from Percussion and Brass. 1993. For some reason, the horn book just has spoken to me for many years, particularly the closer. 1995, 1996. One of the comments on a video of these years was that they thought Porn was illegal on YouTube. These shows are pretty much Drum Corps Pron.... yep yep. 1995... Malaga... 1996... A Mis Abuelos… 1997. There are two things people like in general.... Pirates and Ninja. All this show is missing are Ninja, but maybe they were hiding behind the percussion during the epic swordfight. They had a straight up simple story... which is all one needs if it's exciting and fun. 1998. Being an Anime Enthusiast since 1970, playing the Theme from Lupin alone gives them a spot. 2003. They GET Jutras' music. Not some washed over namby pamby Mister Nice Guy Milquetoast rendition. 2005. This show was so, so well thought out for the Scouts. If they'd have only continued in this direction... God Help Everyone. 2008. Some people are thinking... WHY? I'll tell you, and I know I have stepped on a certain other corps toes over this one. I watched Quarterfinals, and it was clear to me they had the energy, they WANTED in finals as opposed to the other corps appearing to mail in their performance assuming they had it locked. All respect for this corps' desire and drive when it counted. 2011. A very emotional show, especially after the Towers fell. The imagery... always moves me. Dmlkmen
The Scouts are, without a doubt to me, where it begins and ends for most entertaining shows. That said, it’s hard to fit 12 shows throughout the 30 years I have been a fan into one post. But here goes.... 12. 1990- It doesn’t get a lot of love. It took 9th, as the bar stools as well as visual in the opener are a bit of a head scratcher. But this is the first appearance of the piece “Remembrance” , which is always a great listen. The closer “You Can Cook” is very entertaining, 11. 1998- An anniversary show that was a lot of fun and entertaining. Lupon the Third was a different choice for an opener- but a great one . (Now, if we could just get another anime theme song, Cowboy Bebop, on the field). The closer of this show, Rememberance, is a classic. The groove provided by the percussion in this piece is perfect. 10. 1991 - The first City of Angels show. Very entertaining arrangements. The company front at the end, with the rifle toss and files going into the company front- great drill. 9. 1986- Great hornline. The Duke Ellington piece in this show has some terrific brass moments, to go along with great arranging. The closer from Starlight Express is also memorable. 8. 1975 - Almost put this higher, (But must leave room for the rest I really enjoy too).. MacArthur Park, of course, is a classic Scouts piece. So many other pieces in this show are also classic. I am rather new school in drum corps, but this show deserves to stand the test of time. 7. 1994- This show lit up Foxboro on Finals night, as it did all other shows that season. The closer gives me chills every time. The soloist doing his thing, and that push by the corps forward to the end. Pure drum corps joy. 6. 1996- Soprano soloist in the beginning. Mis Abuelos as the opener. The ending push in Malagueña. All deserving to be called the Drum Corps Dream, Part Dos. 5. 1992 - The Second City of Angels. Beefed up book in percussion and brass. Entertainment value turned up. Classic brass sound. 91 was good, but this one is the more entertaining of the two. 4. 2014- Not on everyone’s list to be ranked this high. But I was impressed with it, from the first time I saw it. From the first time st the movie theater event in June, through August and Finals, ot chsnged dramticslly, Particularly the closing piece and the soloist in the end zone- which was a perfect way to end it. I would like another take from the Scouts of Ellis music, or a show with an entirely Kenton book anytime. 3. 1995 - I was in Allentown to see this show live. From that experience, I don’t think there will ever be a louder crowd response I will hear in my lifetime. (2008 Phantom was close). . When your corps is selling signed drum heads at the souvie booth from the snareline, it speaks volumes to how popular this show was at the time. 2. 1984- One of my favorite Scout books ever. I have waited entirely to long for the Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters to be brought back by the Scouts, (or another corps on the field). That piece alone, makes this one of my favorite Scouts shows ever. 1. 1993 - Strawberry Soup.. Crowd response to the sopranos in the stratosphere.- Epic. The rain.. Drums solo kicking ### in Strawberry Soup, as well as laying down the groove throughout the show. This show was on fire throughout the season, and it seemed to hit its peak that night in Jackson. Hook'emCavies
1996- A drum corps fans dream part Dos- this show just rocks. That tenor line was ridiculously large and those screamers! Woo! 1995- read the above comment... woo! 2010- this was an incredibly fun show to watch in Houston. After their performance I remember standing and yelling "Welcome back Madison!"... good times! 1994- what a show! I can jam out to Malaga anytime! 1988- Malaguena... enough said 2005- ok, The Carmen Project was a fun well balanced show between West Side Story and well the opera lol 2008- ok I admit that there are technically better shows, but I really enjoyed this show. They have my personal favorite DCI verson of Danzon. While I admit I am biased with that piece since I played it in orchestra, their verson was powerful and very entertaining. 2017- pretty much like the previous post. I played Prague with the SHSU Wind Ensemble in 2013 at TMEA. The piece is loud, powerful, and yet very depressing considering what it is about. I liked that Madison attempted something different and the members were sold into it. 1998 2011- that was an emotional ride 2007- I actually really enjoy this show. That opener sets the tone extremely well and regardless of what they placed... it is still an entertaining show. Truth is, I am not able to name anymore from the top of my head that sticks out the most for the last couple of places... so I'll say every show they performed was a tie for 12th 🙂 Edited March 20, 2019 by Hook'emCavies

We didn't play Malaga in '98, but our drum major did take pictures in 97 during our Pirate show, which also did not have Malaga. In 1980, Daniel Veerhusen took a picture as well, during Ice Castles. They did use Malaguena in that show though.
