Let's Play A Game - You Can Only Go Forward

Though there are some obvious points of "concern", including the potential for a lack of diversity, I have long thought it would be cool to challenge the design teams to have to respond to a predetermined theme for all corps for the season. Nothing too specific. You would be too limiting to say it had to be jazz, or a show about Elton John's life, or how water becomes ice, but themes such as Mother Nature, Growing up, Travel, Machines, etc. could produce a wide array of interpretations. Always thought it would be fun to sit there waiting for the next corps and thinking, "Okay. Let's see what this team came up with."

Interesting.  I've been involved with the "48-Hour Film Project", doing scoring mostly. The premise is you have 48 hours to script, film, and edit a short 10-12 minute film. Each team draws a genre from a hat so each film will be styled differently, but everyone must incorporate the same 3 elements into their films -- a character (name), a prop, and a line of dialogue.

This could possibly work for DCI.

Genre would be a musical style, randomly selected.

Character -- IDK, suggestions?

Lord knows, we got props.

The line of dialogue could be some well-known composition in the selected style.

Anyway, it would make DCI life interesting.

To all who have commented about my adjudication idea.

What I suggest is to break out of the inbread snob mold that only drum corps experienced professionals are qualified to judge drum corps. Still use the specific rubric criteria, but open up to the fact that there are plenty of qualified professionals outside of drum corps who would bring a fresh set of eyes while keeping a high quality direction to this activity. Secure a Tony award winning choeographer to judge Visual GE; secure a Grammy award winning music producer to judge Music GE; etc...

This would likely upset the apple cart for those who believe only those in the circle of drum corps life are qualified, but it definity would bring a new professional dynamic to drum corps; and possibly greater credibility for the activity.

since the much mocked on here Cesario initiative about entertainment, we have seen results and year long competition that stays tight with shifting right up to the end. Since BD's runaway 2014 ( and even then under them there was shifting) you have had battles right up to the end every season since, even surefire 12th place corps falling to 13th at semis. Sure SCV kind of ran away last year, but they never had a huge spread.

DCI has also added a ton of new faces to the ranks the last few years, and it's not always the same old same old faces working finals week or the big shows. The last thing I as a paying fan want is some big name that doesn't know a GD thing about drum corps putting down a score that could influence a championship. I don't watch IDOL, the voice etc for a reason...and i only watched AGT when Stern was on cause I love Stern.

I want judges that know what the hell they are looking at. You want to get a "name", I want them trained and to go through the process to be certified other judges do before they can put down a ranking. otherwise you may as well have people text in who they want like Sanjaya

I never said a known Name for the sake of a known Name. I said Professional, Highly Qualified eyes and ears from outside in order to counter the perpetual inbread cycle; where the elite snobery thinking has been that only drum corps trained/experienced were/are considered worthy.

And as for your New Faces are in with drum corps, I am reminded of the lyrics penned by The Who: "Meet the new boss; same as the old boss."

Whenever I see this reaction to the idea of widening/deepening the judging pool, I have to wonder... is it really a legitimate concern about knowledge/ability, or do they just not want their apple cart upset?

I'm curious what changes people would like to see happen to the Drum Corps activity, however I have a caveat - only comment with things that you would like to see changed that's not going back to older traditions. We all know the ideas of going back to standard uniforms, no mics, G bugles, no voiceovers/electronics, etc.

What would you like to see in the activity that's never been done before?

And playing Abb or Fx bugles doesn't count.

Actually using other brass keys implemented.  C,D trumpets etc.

Green activity where the pit has to run on treadmills to power their equipment while playing. :)

though the concept of improvisation during horn solos didn't sit well with some dcp folk ..I still believe that at the skill level of the top corps, their soloists can improvise during the 30 seconds or so they perform and not foul the passage so that the cues the other mm's might require become problematic..by Aug.. it would be nice to hear a solo played differently than in June, if it is tasteful and in context

An understandable adjudication system that rewards execution (musical, marching, performance, etc.) instead of the hash that currently exists. Figure skating figured this out a while ago (e.g., if you fall you ain't winning that day) and I'm not really sure why drum corps can't (e.g., marchers out of step, different marching techniques used by marching members in the same corps, entrances missed, equipment dropped, etc.).

Respectfully snipped, and only using your quote b/c it was the first i remembered having a pertinent statement...

I don't want to see this activity judged like Idol or The Voice, but I have often thought it could be interesting having an outside, professional person like a Grammy award winning artist (not necessarily one that is "famous"), with a completely unbiased opinion, share their opinions on our corps.  Lets let them judge and score, and compare to what our traditional judges score, and see the differences, and hear why they evaluated the way they did.  It could be very enlightening to say the least.

Yes, I remember it well. (That could be a great line for a song. Oh, never mind.). I just mentioned one of many such changes done by corps over the years.

Do you not remember the Cadets pole drill in 2011?  Huh? huh?

the battle scene between A&D (half poles actually)
