June 20 Run-Down

For the third year in a row, Bluecoats open up the season in first place with Carolina Crown right behind them. The gap of 0.250 is the smallest of the three years. The six corps in competition on night one finished in the same order they did the night of the last competition in Indianapolis.

June 21 Run-Down

Last year's champion Santa Clara Vanguard earns the top spot on its first night of 2019 competition with a 0.650 lead over Blue Devils in head-to-head competition. The top scoring corps from Detroit finds itself in the #3 spot now with all the usual disclaimers about comparing scores from show to show. The top 5 are separated by 2.150 in 2019 compared to 1.950 in 2018. However, if you look at the top 6 instead, there's a spread of 2.300 in 2019 versus 3.000 in 2018.

As you can see below, scores are way up in the debut shows of 2019 compared to 2018. The only corps with a decrease year over year is Phantom Regiment. Opening scores tend to be a reflection of the previous year's finals' placement order and the large opening score increase for Mandarins and decrease for Phantom Regiment seems to follow that trend.

2019 Debut vs. 2018 Debut vs. 2017 Debut (Two premiere shows only for corps that performed in all three years' worth)

Santa Clara Vanguard - 72.350 vs. 70.700 vs. 70.050 = +1.650 in 2019
Blue Devils - 71.700 vs. 71.300 vs. 71.750 = +0.400 in 2019
Bluecoats - 71.150 vs. 70.300 vs. 72.300 = +0.850 in 2019
Carolina Crown - 70.900 vs. 70.000 vs. 70.950 = +0.900 in 2019
The Cavaliers - 70.200 vs. 69.350 vs. 70.150 = +0.850 in 2019
Mandarins - 67.100 vs. 62.950 vs. 60.500 = +4.150 in 2019
Blue Stars - 65.450 vs. 62.000 vs. 64.150 = +3.450 in 2019
The Academy - 64.600 vs. 61.550 vs. 63.650 = +3.050 in 2019
Phantom Regiment - 63.250 vs. 64.000 vs. 64.650 = -0.750 in 2019
Blue Devils B - 57.600 vs. 55.850 vs. 57.850 = +1.750 in 2019
Vanguard Cadets = 54.900 vs. 52.700 vs. 55.150 = +2.200 in 2019
Blue Devils C = 41.400 vs. 36.550 vs. 44.950 = +4.850 in 2019

June 22 Run-Down

With three shows and 15 world class corps in action, June 22 is the busiest day of the season until June 28 when we will see 20 at once.

Scores increased the most at the Madison, WI show with Carolina Crown improving by 1.750 and Blue Stars by 1.450. Based on Detroit's head-to-head scores, these are likely to fall back in line with where Bluecoats, Boston Crusaders, The Cadets, and Phantom Regiment (0.250-0.700) at tonight's Zionsville show.

That said, Blue Devils C had the highest night-over-night improvement (1.850) and no corps decreased.

Crossmen debuted in the top 12 at #11. Madison Scouts and Colts debuted just outside the top 12 at #13 and #14 respectively. Blue Knights is the only 2018 finalist not to have competed yet. Based on the fact they have never missed finals at Lucas Oil Stadium, it is safe to assume that they will be in the hunt for one of the finalist spots along with Spirit of Atlanta, coming off a 13th place finish in 2018. We should be able to make some head-to-head comparisons regarding the bottom grouping of the top 12 over the next few nights, but we will have to wait until June 28 to see where Blue Knights work in to the equation.

June 23 Run-Down

In head-to-head competition Colts defeated Madison Scouts by 2.050 points after losing the night before by 1.100. Given the proximity to the #12 spot in the rankings for these two corps, this could become a fun battle to watch as the season progresses. Blue Devils narrowed the gap with Santa Clara Vanguard to just 0.400 points, the smallest of the season so far. Crossmen had the largest score increase (2.800) followed by two other corps in the same show: Colts (2.550) and The Cadets (2.100). The only corps to decrease in score was Madison Scouts (-0.600).

The first weekend of the season is behind us. Just one show per night for the next three nights and then an off day before things gear up again. The mos significant storyline is likely how Boston Crusaders line up with Carolina Crown tonight for the first time since the premiere show and then Bluecoats tomorrow night.

Thank you DCR. You forgot Boston in your June 21st run down.

No I didn't. Boston did not compete at that show in 2017; the run down was only corps that had three years of data.

June 24 Run-Down

Boston Crusaders saw the largest point increase (3.100) after a day off. Phantom Regiment had the second highest score increase and did not have a day off in between shows (2.300). Although the rankings make it appear that Bluecoats have fallen considerably, let us remember that the corps is still undefeated and has not competed since June 22. That changes tonight.

Spirit of Atlanta debuted in the #11 spot, making the 10-14 range, minimally, quite a battle. Music City debuted at #18. This puts Spirit two spots ahead of its starting position in 2018 and Music City one spot ahead.

June 25 Run-Down

Bluecoats returned to competition with a 3.550 point increase, moving the corps back into the top spot. Colts defeated Madison Scouts head-to-head for the second time in three opportunities. Note that the 18 to 19 comparison varies by a couple of days as I try to line up the off days. In 2018, there was an off day on Tuesday, June 26 and in 2019 that off day comes on  Thursday, June 27. I try to keep things aligned so that the weekends/regionals are always comparable.
