July 8 Run-Down

Pacific Crest defeated Troopers in head-to-head competition for the first time this season. Previously, Troopers were ahead by margins of 0.9, 1.4, and 1.6. Phantom Regiment continued to extend its lead over Spirit of Atlanta and now has a 1.6 edge for the last finalist spot. Southwind, Louisiana Stars, and Heat Wave all debuted. Southwind is poised for the greatest gain over 2018 at the #27 spot compared to finishing at #34 last year. This is third among Open Class corps going to Indianapolis.

We have a pretty big Tuesday night with four shows. The most intriguing new match-up is Crossmen and Mandarins meeting for the first time.

July 9 Run-Down

In their first head-to-head match-up, Crossmen defeated Mandarins by 1.700 points. By score alone, Phantom Regiment moves up to the #11 spot and Mandarins move into the #12 spot. The next several shows with Mandarins matching up against new corps will be important to determining where the corps stands. Earlier when they were on the west coast without any direct competition, they seemed destined for a spot as high as single digits in finals and now it appears they may be in a fight for finals.

After losing to Pacific Crest for the first time this season at their last show, Troopers closed the gap to tie. The two corps are now ranked #16.

In their second match-up, Louisiana Stars beat Southwind so each corps has now one once.

I heard there was no percussion judge at the show with crossmen and mandarins.  since this is a strong caption for mandarins and a weaker one for crossmen that 1.7 deficit could be a little off once they see a full panel

Good point and likely does close the gap. It is notable, though, that Crossmen beat Mandarins in every judged caption at this show (and The Cadets in Visual Analysis).

July 10 Run-Down

Last competition dates are all over the place making comparisons across shows even harder than usual. I will note that this time last year, the top 3 all competed at different shows (last night the three were at two shows) and the placements held for finals.

July 11 Run-Down

The big question of the night was always going to be, "How much of a jump will Boston Crusaders make in score with 6 days between competitions?" The answer? 3.500 points. Phantom Regiment continues its strong upward movement in score as well.

July 12 Run-Down

The biggest score increases all came in the Open Class show as most corps were back in competition for the first time since July 5 or June 30. All corps except Blue Devils C improved by 6+ points with Impulse leading the way at 9.6. This had a big impact on the Open Class rankings, which will likely change even more after tonight when the rest of the country's Open Class corps are back in competition as well. Shadow made its season debut at #34.

In World Class, The Cavaliers saw a 2.6 point improvement in their first show since July 6. Madison Scouts improved 2.1 with three days less rehearsal time. Troopers decreased and was the only corps to do so (-0.2).

There are 35 corps competing tonight, including all 22 World Class corps. Let's take a look at each show:

Diablo Valley Classic - Pittsburg, CA

  • We are only a week away from four of these corps finishing up their seasons including Blue Devils B and Vanguard Cadets. That leaves Gold as the highest ranked corps in this group going to Indy.

Drums Along the Rockies - Denver, CO

  • Blue Knights and The Cadets meet head-to-head for the first time. The last time they both competed on the same night was July 9. The Cadets held a 0.650 point advantage.
  • Crossmen have been gaining ground on The Cadets for several shows now and stand just 1.200 back.

Drums Across the River Region - Millbrook, AL

  • Louisiana Stars have beaten Southwind two out of three times the corps competed. Legends sits right in the middle of these two corps by score and tonight gives a head-to-head opportunity to see where the corps matches up against its Open Class competitors.

DCI Memphis - Memphis, TN

  • Three of the top six meet head-to-head: Santa Clara Vanguard, Boston Crusaders, Carolina Crown. This is the first time Santa Clara Vanguard faces off against the other two. Carolina Crown has not competed since July 8 so there is a big question about how much of a gain they will see. The last time all three corps competed on the same day was July 5. Santa Clara Vanguard was at 81.95 compared to 80.80 for Boston and 80.65 for Crown.
  • Guardians make its 2019 debut with no Open Class competition.

Tour of Champions - Northern Illinois - DeKalb, IL

  • Based on previous spreads, there may be as much interest on whether Blue Stars can gain ground on The Cavaliers as on whether The Cavaliers can gain ground on Bluecoats.
  • Mandarins and Phantom Regiment meet head-to-head for the first time in a match-up that may have finalist implications down the road. With Colts and The Academy just outside that grouping, they have a chance to make a statement tonight as well about whether they deserve to be in the conversation.

July 13 Run-Down

Rain definitely got in the way of an important Saturday night of competition. All will be revealed in a week's time as tours begin to mix and all the World Class corps come together in San Antonio. Unfortunately, Columbians had their final show of the season rained out.

Diablo Valley Classic - Pittsburg, CA

  • We are only a week away from four of these corps finishing up their seasons including Blue Devils B and Vanguard Cadets. That leaves Gold as the highest ranked corps in this group going to Indy.  Huge score increases at this show for the top corps. With no World Class corps in competition, it is difficult to say if the scores would hold up in comparison.

Legends made a strong statement with a 3.850 point win over Louisiana Stars.

Santa Clara Vanguard led the pack by 0.800 points. Carolina Crown made a big leap (4.500 points) after a nice rehearsal block of the schedule and defeated Boston Crusaders by 0.850.

No, on both accounts.
  • Mandarins and Phantom Regiment meet head-to-head for the first time in a match-up that may have finalist implications down the road. With Colts and The Academy just outside that grouping, they have a chance to make a statement tonight as well about whether they deserve to be in the conversation.  Mandarins beat Phantom Regiment by 0.600. Colts and The Academy lost ground compared to both. At least for the moment, there are only 13 corps gunning for the 12 finalist spots.
