2019 Daily Run Down

June 26 Run-Down

Another night with only one show. Boston Crusaders had the largest score increase at 2.150, pushing up into the #2 spot although the next several corps have been out of competition for a few nights.

All attention is really moving to the 28th when Blue Knights, Pacific Crest, and Genesis make their season debuts, Encorps makes its DCI debut, and all but one (The Academy) of the current 9-15 ranked corps compete head-to-head.

June 28 Run-Down

Here we go! All of last year's finalists have now competed at least once. If the season ended today, Spirit of Atlanta would return to finals for the first time since 2013 and Phantom Regiment would miss finals for the first time since 1973. Bluecoats and Santa Clara Vanguard maintain their undefeated seasons so far. The two corps meet relatively soon in Lisle, IL on July 5.

There were several large score increases, mostly due to time off: Santa Clara Vanguard & The Cavaliers (2.700), Blue Stars (2.550), Music City (2.300), and Crossmen (2.250).

Scores are still trending high compared to 2018. You have to go all the way down to #8 to find a 2018 corps outscoring a 2019 corps.

Another interesting tidbit: There was a tie in the #2 spot last year as well at this point and Blue Devils were in the #6 spot this time last year as well as they do their extended early season rehearsal block.

We saw a number of season debuts: Blue Knights at #9, Pacific Crest at #19, Genesis at #21, Gold at #23, Raiders at #24, Vessel at #26, Encorps at #27, Watchmen at #28, and Incognito at #31.

June 29 Run-Down

Sorry for the delay. I'm posting from London and it took me a bit to get to this today!

June 29 gave us 20 World Class corps in competition for the first time. We will hit that number next on July 5.

The big question to be answered was high high would the Blue Devils go after six nights without a competition. The answer is Blue Devils score went up 4.250 points, but that was only good enough for the #5 spot compared to the #2 spot back on June 23 when the corps last competed. More importantly, however, is that the gap between Santa Clara Vanguard and Blue Devils remained exactly the same at 0.400 points. Amazingly, there appear to be five corps within striking distance of the title with only 1.750 points separating #1 and #5. This time last year that gap was 3.900 points. In fact, only three corps were within 1.900 points of the #1 ranking this time last year (Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Devils, Bluecoats) and those three corps wound up the medalists on finals night.

In head-to-head competition, Spirit of Atlanta maintained its hold on the #12 spot with Phantom Regiment falling just outside the top 12 at #13.

Spartans debuted at #21, the highest ranked Open Class corps going to Indianapolis. 7th Regiment debuted at #26.

Just a special Thanks for doing this. If you don't receive a lot of posted reply's, don't think we don't notice and appreciate the effort. I know you spent considerable time to set up this spreadsheet and it is so much better than what DCI has to offer on their webpage.

Great Job! Please Continue

June 30 Run-Down

The biggest story of the night was the Blue Devils victory over Santa Clara Vanguard by 0.050. The two corps do not face off again for two weeks when they match up in El Dorado, KS on July 15. Bluecoats now stand alone in the undefeated category.

Score increases trended higher in Minnesota than in California so the placement changes should be considered with skepticism. That said, Phantom Regiment led the pack with a 2.100 increase. In head-to-head competition, Phantom Regiment closed the gap with Spirit of Atlanta to just 0.250. Both corps have some rehearsal time before they face off again on July 5 in Lexington, SC.

July 1 Run-Down

Today was the first example this year of the challenges of shows with small numbers of similarly-ranked corps. In Lynn, increases averaged 1.930 points with a range of 1.500 to 2.900. In Mesa, increases averaged 0.875 points with a range of -0.150 to 1.300. In my humble opinion, the Open Class corps threw things off on the East Coast as the judges started higher and then had to go up further due to spreads. The nature of the West Coast show did not create the same situation. Just a guess but I suspect there is a correction coming. No head-to-head placement changes although Troopers did gain on The Academy and 7th Regiment gained on Spartans.

July 2 Run-Down

Jersey Surf made one of the most significant debuts of the season with its highest opening score since 2009 and an initial placement of #19. For reference, 2009 (along with 2012) marks the highest placement for Jersey Surf in the Lucas Oil Stadium era (#20). There are several corps yet to perform that placed higher than Jersey Surf last year however. There is just one World Class corps left to debut - Seattle Cascades - and we will see where they fit into the puzzle on July 5.

River City Rhythm also made its 2019 debut at #28.

After several days apart, Bluecoats and Boston Crusaders were head-to-head again and Bluecoats extended its undefeated streak and saw its lead over Boston improve by a few tenths. The Cadets gained on Boston as well. All that said, in raw score, Boston Crusaders are ranked #2 while several other top corps rehearse.

Raiders saw a large score decrease of -1.100 which is a little more surprising given the fact the corps had not competed since June 28. The corps' new in-state competitor, Encorps, gained some ground.
