Is smoking still allowed on tour?

My group is down in Open Class, and we tend to trend younger in age.  That makes it easier for us in some ways.  Our policies do ban smoking for everyone in the organization from the time you arrive for operations (beginning of camp / start of move ins) to the time you leave (end of camp / go home from tour).  Thanks to our first trip to Denver last year, we also had to add a ban on substances that might otherwise be legal in the state.  

Honestly, it never even occurred to me that there might be corps that still don't have no-smoking policies.  😐

On the YEA website, this is in the code of conduct for all adults...it is not Cadet-specific, as it would cover other YEA programs/events, such as USBands.

• I will refrain from the use of all alcohol, tobacco, and nicotine products while serving YEA!, particularly while in the presence of youth or while representing YEA! publicly.

Sidewalks are variable depending how close you are (beyond 8 feet) to the entrance of any building (excepting bars, cigar/tobacco shops, and casinos).

Southwind bans smoking and vaping when participating in anything corps-related, up to and including housing, rehearsing and traveling with the corps. Most of that policy has to do with us housing, for the most part, exclusively on school campuses, which normally forbid tobacco products/vapes from being used on campus. Also, since the average age of the members is 18, most of them cannot smoke legally in most of the states where we rehearse or perform (the legal smoking age in Alabama is 19).

Even the adults who smoke have to go do it off campus. Housing is hard enough to get these days without someone breaking the school system's rules and getting us all kicked out.

I'm just glad it's trending downward. A lot of people don't realize how ubiquitous cigarettes were in drum corps, even 15 years ago. There are so many staff members (some HOF-worthy) who were unapologetic about it. I hope local/state laws keep getting aggressive toward tobacco and vaping.

That being said (my hot take): if it's between a dumb kid who smokes but stays reasonably active during the winter vs. a non-smoker who does nothing but plays video games and eats terrible food ... I'm taking the smoker. I've seen too many preventable injuries from people who may take their long-term health a little more seriously, but do little-to-nothing in the winter to prepare for tour.
