Popular Post Precious Roy
Random thoughts the day after, from my section 126c row 24 perspective. I brought along my wife (musically inclined, but only knows about DCI by being married to me), 12 year old son (starting his first year in his school's marching band; bass drum), and the 16 year old daughter of a friend (also in high school band). The venue: Next year, I'll actually remember to get a pre-paid pass for parking in one of the closer parking decks. We ended up in the Blue Bloo lot, which was a bit of (an uphill) haul to get to the stadium. Although, we did pass by the Home Depot Backyard area, where some corps were warming up. My son thought was very cool. MBS is huge. Cavernous. I've never been to Lucas Oil, so I don't know how this compares acoustically. But the Benz is better than the old Georgia Dome, especially compared to the amount of concourse foot traffic and random noise the dome used to have. The Delta Club lounge and food options/prices are a nice perk (although the pizza place ran out of pizza during the last intermission, when I was about 3 people away from the front of the line). Free soft drink refills! The corps: Due to prior commitments in the morning, we arrived just before what was supposed to be the first intermission. So we saw Madison first, and I gotta admit it was an entertaining show. Our friend's daughter ended up buying a Scouts hoodie. Was thoroughly confused when Jersey Surf came on after Madison. And then Crocker announced a short intermission, which lasted exactly the amount of time it took to transition from Surf's show to (I think) Colts show. My favorites shows out of the next group were Crossmen and PR, and both those corps got great ovations from the crowd in the area we were in. Our friend's daughter was a big fan of Mandarin's show last year, to she was really into them again. SOA seems pretty strong, and they obviously had the home town crowd on their side. But I thought PR's show was definitely better last night. Finally, I'm not a fan of all the extra notes in Academy's version of Bridge Over Troubled Water. It sounds like an American Idol tryout that adds unnecessary extra vocal runs into an otherwise fine performance to try to score extra points with the judges. Blue Stars show theme was easy enough to follow for me (though not the whole story line). Ironically, the only thing I remember from BK's show is the title. Being an IxTJ personality type, shows with deep philosophical meanings are not my cup of tea. Cadets, much to our surprise, were much better in person compared to what we had seen previously only in video. We were able to follow the story arc pretty well. The changing colors on the scepter, as it moved from person to person, was an effective device in showing the changes in its ownership. The "we can do better" came across as quite cheesy, but it helped understand what was going on there as well. The music wasn't bad, and the percussion (to my untrained eyes and ears) was pretty good. Crown was an obvious step up, overall, from the corps above them. I told my son about the big opening note Crown has in their show, and he went down to the blast zone to see/hear/feel their show up close. He was not disappointed. Our group (especially my wife) really enjoyed BAC. She was impressed by the "Goliath" character not only running with stilts, but then coming to a complete perfect stop without falling over. The big stage prop in Cavaliers' show was a bit of distraction for me. I don't know why, for sure. My eyes kept being drawn to it, even when nothing of note was going on in/on/around it. I'll admit up front that Bloo has my favorite show this year (that's not blind loyalty, though -- SCV was my favorite last year). Having said that, one has to truly appreciate and acknowledge the detail, craftsmanship, and originality of the things that the Blue Devils are doing (and quite frankly are always doing). But one thing bothered me a bit with BD's show last night. From my seat at the stadium, on the big powerful music hits, there was as much sound coming from the speakers as there was coming from the horns on the field. And I don't mean the thunderous goo, or the effects sounds. I'm talking about the horns. At one point near the end, the whole of the horn line was to my left, but I heard the horns' sounds coming from a speaker placed slightly right of directly in front of me. I only bring this up as a comparison to what I heard from Bluecoats. And what I heard from Bluecoats was amplified vocals and noise effects, and amplified soloists. But completely acoustic ensemble horns. And it made their volume seem like half that of BD's right before them. The difference was that striking. And I'm sure others in my general area noticed the volume difference too. And that may explain the seemingly tepid response from the crowd during (but not after) Bluecoat's show. As for SCV -- I would say that their uniforms are, um, not very effective. Also, not a big fan of the cell and transmission tower props. I think they tried too hard to design a show to outdo last year. Perhaps they should have gone in a completely different direction. But then again, it is scoring well, so maybe they did the right thing after all. Overall: I'm admittedly a dino, but I'm perfectly fine with the current state of the art form. There's enough variety in show design, music choice, and overall design philosophy, to give everybody something to like. If DCI, DCA, or some other new entity, were to start a new "Classic Class" of drum corps, with no amplification, no props, and judging criteria that emphasized drill marching and more traditional color guard equipment usage, I would totally seek out and watch it (assuming it was of good enough quality). But -- I would also continue to watch the current DCI, with whatever rules and judging sheets are current at the time (again, assuming the quality stays high). TL;DR -- Its another good year for drum corps. Edited July 28, 2019 by Precious Roy there>their typo correction 9

They won every show that year and took third at finals. That would be one of my all-time favorites, Blue Devils 1988. What a horn show they had! Also the show I point to illustrate the visual impact that was lost with those dang gray and black uniforms in a large stadium. They were phenomenal in small venues where you could see them up close and personal.

1956OPR
For those who rely on recaps from fromthepressbox for a recap of this show : the Music Total Recap is skewered because Blue Stars' score is entered as 29.9125 (with an ordinal of 1) rather than 25.9125 (with an ordinal of 9), resulting in incorrect Music Total ordinals for all the corps who finished from 2-9. I do because I can print their product. FYI, these ordinals from 2-9 should be 4,1,2,6,5,8,9,7 rather than 5,2,3,7,6,9,1 I noticed this this morning and, as a courtesy) have already sent fromthepressbox an email so they can fix whatever caused this error. If there was consistency in judging, wouldn’t scores move closer together over the years rather than being slotted in the same placement area year in and year out?
