Judges on the sidelines vs judges on the field

Recommended Posts

How have the Brass, Analysis and Percussion scores compared to past years with these judges off the field. You would think scores would be higher because they can't get  out there and follow the lines. Is there a difference this year?

Really, the caption that's affected the most among the three judges that judge from the field (Visual Proficiency, Brass and Percussion) is Percussion because those judges were the ones that tended to enter the field the most.

Comparing scores between San Antonio this year and the same show last year, not a ton has changed. SCV still is 1st in Percussion, and they actually got the same exact Percussion score as they did a year ago (18.3). I don't see much change in either of the other captions, but then again, these tend to be a bit more volatile than Percussion in recent years.

If you want to see where the most obvious impacts of this rule change lie, you'd have to compare overall visual designs between today and a year ago. In particular, things like the placement of the front ensemble (not always exactly "on the 50" this year), the placement of the battery during their features (more and more coming directly to the front sideline instead of just behind the pit or elsewhere on the field), and even the placement of the hornline at times (many more features next to/in front of the pit, with some MMs occasionally going beyond the front sideline). All of this is being done to give the three on-field judges better sightlines, since they can't go more than 2 yards past the front sideline like they used to.

The most obvious difference is that now without judges on the field FANS CAN WATCH THE FRIGGIN' SHOW WITHOUT THE STUPID DISTRACTIONS CAUSED BY THE JUDGES RUNNING THROUGH THE FORMATIONS!

It's ten time better now.

Thank you DCI.  Finally.  🙏

except as the former front ensemble gets moved further out, it gets harder to see them

The move to remove the percussion judges from the field was extremely misguided. Terrible move. The effects of it can be seen in just how inconsistent percussion judging has been this season

I was waiting for this.

If you want to note a change, then take note of how drastically corps are changing position in rank from night to night in percussion and brass (going from 1/2 to 5/6 and back again with the same line up)

On the other hand, this doesn't seem to have any effect on overall ranking and there does seem to be a higher level of competition and a division of captions from last year (with Bloo winning SA without winning any major captions outside of music analysis).

Will have to keep watching how it plays out to know if the inconsistency is related to the physical staging of the adjudicators... or if it is a result of wide competition in captions.
