A few thoughts: Cascades: if 22nd is this good, that demonstrates the quality of the shows placing higher. I thought they did a great job and it is evident they enjoy their show. Colts: drum corps version of Mr. Heat Miser/Mr. Snow Miser. They had a few uniform issues going from fire to ice but overall, what an incredible effect. I think they transition well musically from the raging flames to the cooler ice. Mandarins: they body movement is incredible, the show is riveting, and I’m sure I will notice more details in Allentown. I especially like the varied use of drums as the show begins. Crown: I love you, but I don’t see how you won tonight. “Gabriel’s Oboe” May have been the most beautiful moment musically of the night, but what followed was a bit jumbled. I did enjoy the guard which I thought was on target. The drill had great moments and some that seemed confusing. Boston Crusaders: tonight was your night. I thought you would have won, but I’m not a percussion guy and that seems to be the weakness. The guard was flawless and the musical book has improved so much since East Coast Classic. I’m looking forward to Allentown with the three way battle between you, Cavies, and Crown. looking at the recap music overall is the issue, they pretty much won everything else
Popular Post craiga
Mini Review from Lawrence: (I only saw the final four) Colts Surprisingly good! Kind of a new take on the Darkness into Light theme, but with awesome costuming and props...the color change from the oranges to the blue was very effective and the end when they had some horn players playing from the prop up front gave the whole show a Bluecoats vibe...not a bad thing. I don't think I've ever seen this drum corps move this well. Congrats kids and staff! Mandarins Another surprise...this corps is on fire. They are very, very good. It is a cool show with lots of non-traditional (for drum corps anyway) sounds and instruments. The members sell this show very well. I can't wait to see them again. This drum corps was a real pleasure to experience. Crown Total respect for this horn line. They sound great! First note of the show is FFFF and a huge impact. Some people have griped because of the amplification but that doesn't bother me. The opening statement is very effective. I also want to say that I think Crown's guard is getting a bad rap. If you watch them, they are actually very good. I think the only issue with them has to do with their staging. They simply are not highlighted in a way which provides many WOW moments. I also want acknowledge the fact that as a drill designer, I appreciate their hornline's drill vocabulary. They move a lot...at least as much as Boston, and they move well. Although they probably won't medal this year, if they WERE to, that would at least send a signal to the activity that fast-paced, run and gun drill is still effective and to be credited. I actually enjoyed this show, but I do agree with others that the last 2 minutes seem to flatten out in terms of effect. This is NOT a performer issue. Boston closed on them considerably tonight from the last meeting and I of course hope BAC can get them in the end. But, I do have great respect for this corps and I do love your approach to drill. Boston Crusaders This was their best show of the year. They looked and sounded incredible. GOLIATH is a visual feast, and this guard is phenomenal. The excitement builds throughout all five parts and climaxes with the new ending. The Goliath character now actually runs at times creating a surreal effect. Like Crown, Boston has (now) over 200 drill sets, and while nobody (but me) cares about that, the effect is nevertheless awesome, especially with all the body that is part of the show. Crown was up over BAC by a point in drums tonight, and Boston returned the favor by being up on guard by a similar spread. It is my policy to never complain about a judge's number so I won't do it here. The drum number is continuing to grow and I expect that to extend throughout the week next week. For those few who have been losing sleep, the 4th tenor was in for most of the show and did a great job. It really is a fun and exciting show and there were some folks in front of me wearing Crown shirts who turned to me afterward and said we have two really good drums corps this year. They are right. One final thought: After the encore, BAC put their equipment down and walked onto the track to be met by several hundred alumni. Everyone gathered arm in arm and sang the corps song together.. kids who are currently marching and some folks in their 70s. I am very thankful for the alumni/member/staff culture in Boston. It has served us well through thick and thin. Great work, everybody! Edited August 2, 2019 by craiga 12

Ediker
There is not much more I can add to the great reviews already posted! This was the kind of drum corps show we all dream about. Perfect summer night. Great lineup (from all parts of the country). Awesome performances. Very happy and responsive crowd! Thanks to all of the drum corps who traveled many miles to bring us their performances. The activity's history runs very deep in this region, and I hope the performers got a sense of how appreciative this crowd was.

Yeah I was thinking it was a sarcastic post. but hey the score was improved. Keep it up DL! I have watched a few lot videos of the DL - I have some thoughts / opinion. There are parts that I have listened to that personally I do not like the book. BUT I am not saying the book is weak etc. I think the tightness could be cleaned up. Maybe that means dropping the level? I am not sure that would help. About the 10 snares. I am not a big fan of even number lines. But that is just me wanting that center snare! I know these members are working efficiently and aggressively to make progress with the score sheet. In the end they will enjoy this year and I look forward to growing with their fellow Giant's.

LabMaster
On 8/2/2019 at 9:53 AM, wilme861 said: Lol just no. A missing quad or snare will never affect a percussion score unless the line is used to listening to said individual for timing purposes or something like that which ends up causing problems. A missing bass might cause a lower score if the basses aren’t on it and clarity is lost and gaps are inconsistent. But generally speaking, gaps in the line don’t really affect the percussion scores but could affect the visual or GE stuff depending on how the gap is handled. Bringing back a 4th quad has a more likely chance of actually hurting the score just because there is one more person being added to a part so that increases the chances one can screw up. It was a private joke with Ghost.
