Cadets 2020

Exceptionally detailed article that pretty clearly explains why it would be virtually impossible for Varsity to ever "buy" YEA or any part of it.

The most key point is that money cannot flow from the non-profit to the for-profit.   Varsity could effective "control" YEA by appointing/electing a board that would do their bidding, but all that could come of that would be Varsity money being given to YEA/USBands to carry out their mission.  USBands was making money for YEA that was used, in part, to fund Cadets.  USBand could never legally use money it made to boost Varsity's revenue and bottom line.

What if a for profit could make money (in their own pot) from what a nonprofit does or from the nonprofit still existing? Say a nonprofit cheer agency is ready to go under. Would be in varsity’s best interest to keep the agency active so would take it over. Varsity does not make money from the nonprofits pot but good for varsity’s bottom line all the same

Doubtful Varsity is interested in US Bands given USB's connection with YEA. Why bother buying something from an org who has no visible means of support? Wait for them to crash, then start up your own circuit free from the detritus.

Thanks.

Now I have to ask, what are probably  a couple of dumb questions.

1.In looking at their web site,it only talks about "cheer".

Do they currently have any involvement with marching band or drum corps ?

2.If they don't,why do people think they would in the future ?

1.  Yes, they have purchased DSI (maker  of gloves, shoes, bibbers, flags, field equipment, etc) and Stanbury uniforms.

2.  It's only a matter of time, I think, before they become a one-stop shop for band uniforms, auxiliary uniforms, equipment, etc.

From what you posted,Varsity becoming a "one stop shop"  for uniforms, equipment, etc. makes a lot of sense.

It does seem like it would be somewhat of a leap for them to get into the performance end (competitions, camps, etc.) of

either marching band or drum corps.

Varsity is backed by Bain Capital. Their aim is to try to dominate the high school cheer market, having vertical integration of all elements (costumes, t-shirts, shoes, etc). Cheerleading is the perfect medium for them. Band is more complicated, but has some potential if they can find a way to pull all of the elements together.

Man... can you imagine if all this happened 20 years ago, what RAMD would be like?

It would make Mount St. Helens look like steam from someone's clothes dryer.  LOL.

well at least two people tried to expose some of this stuff there.

Varsity or others could look at this as an expansion of their present competitive youth activities they are already involved with. A sale would allow US Bands to be on it's own with no connection to YEA! (similar to the Crossmen "sale")

Then YEA could dissolve their Board and use those funds to pay off any outstanding debt or declare bankruptcy.

The Cadets then create a "new " stand alone non-profit with their own mission statement for the Corps. Now you are back to a pre YEA Cadets and eliminate the Hopkins stigma that has tarnished the organization.

It will all depend on whose name any bills/debts are in (YEA vs US Bands or Cadets) It all becomes a shell game just like the corporate for -profit business world.

Of Course this is "ALL" hypothetical
