Most everyone is doing the avante garde, post modern, esoteric, hidden meaning thing. I'm constantly thinking "what is it?" Random circles and sticks, run ways, doors opening, strange props, futuristic costumes... I feel like I'm in the modern art museum at the Smithsonian every drum corps season. Does anyone miss a little bit of realism and grit in shows? Maybe every once in a while a major score show ... like the old days...Phantom, Fiddler, etc. Or a show that doesn't leave people wondering "what is it?" Nope, I LOVE it. I'm tired of cheese. Literal shows make me feel like the corps thinks I'm stupid Edited August 14, 2019 by Cappybara
SNModdison
I think show designs have only gotten better through the years. While I do love some older shows, I wouldn't want DCI to go backwards.

MikeRapp
I often wonder how Machine would be received today.

It's a little hard to do that when you get an average of 30 seconds of music (brass). On topic, how BK's show had anything to do with 'remembering everything', I have no idea. Vanguard, Vox whatever, didn't understand it at all. 4

Literal shows make me feel like the corps thinks I'm stupid So Avante Garde shows will make us feel smart? Even if no one understands them because the "theme" isn't really aligned with the musical production? I felt there were many examples of "literal" presentations this year. By your description of cheese, would Bluecoats fall into that category? If so, then it was Beatles cheese from beginning to end. But we all liked it. Being totally committed to Avante Garde may cause a corps to move away from audience engagement. As for me I am happy to watch an audience friendly program. Entertain me. A little cheese with incredible playing and marching and guard work is good for me.

MikeRapp
Being obtuse as a way to look cool or deep is not good design.
GUARDLING
There have been many shows that were so good musically, visually and paced well that people didn't care what the message was. Signs of good design as well as musically and visually stimulating
