Shows to beat BD since 2008

2011 - Carolina Crown (twice), The Cavaliers (nine times), and The Cadets (fourteen times).

2013 - The Cadets (once), and Carolina Crown (fifteen times).

2015 - Bluecoats (once because of penalty), The Cadets (five times), and Carolina Crown (three times).

2016 - Carolina Crown (twice) and Bluecoats (nine times).

2018 - Bluecoats (once) and Santa Clara Vanguard (fourteen times).

2019 - Santa Clara Vanguard (four times) and Bluecoats (seven times).

Interesting takeaways:

  • Amazingly, only five corps total have beaten BD this decade.
  • Crown has the most number of wins over BD this decade at 22, followed by Cadets at 20, Bloo and SCV tied at 18 each, and the Cavaliers a distant fifth at 9.
  • Every corps during this span that eventually won the Championship beat BD at least 9 times.
  • In each season that BD did not go undefeated this decade, at least two different corps beat them head-to-head at some point. (This streak probably stretches even further back; I believe 2003 was the last time BD got beaten by only one corps during the season, that of course being the Cavaliers in their early 2000s prime.)

Five great ones, I agree.

Totally from a "how much I liked the show" perspective:

1) 2008 Phantom

2) 2016 Bluecoats

3) 2013 Crown

4) 2011 Cadets

5) 2018 Vanguard

Favorite is definitely Bluecoats 2016.  Best across performance captions IMO is SCV 2018.

+1

After some careful consideration here are my rankings.

1. SCV 2018- This gets first place for me because it has 2 MAJOR "it" factors.  The first is that this show was so clean and flawless throughout the captions. The emotional pit percussion in my body is a cage bleeding into an aggressive, flawless show. There is a lot of musical contrast here and SCV nailed it. Secondly this show went where no show went, staging wise before. I do want to caution that the ranking of this show may fall over time for me. But for now I am of the opinion that it is the best of the 5.

2. Phantom Regiment 08- this show probably isn't as clean as the others but I would argue it's the most legendary drum corps show of all time. A true underdog story that the crowd got behind and it was pulled into first place. From I AM SPARTACUS to the end was so unique and powerful. Extra points for bringing the dead DM to retreat. I feel this show was pivotal for the activity as well. The 00-06 champions were pushing difficult drill to it's limit and very few corps were doing story shows. BD did their thing in 07 then this show happened. Now shows that tell a story are commonplace.

3. Bluecoats 2016- the energy of this show and what it brought to DCI are unbelievable. The 3D/4D concept was amazing and the music book attractive and approachable. This might go down as one of the most influential shows of all time. It gets 3rd because while it was a GE monster, Bloo wasn't the strongest in any captions.

4. Carolina Crown 2013- I was at finals in 2012 I could feel crown was on the brink of something great. The brass book in this show was unbelievable (OOTW was crazier, IMO), and it is definitely a WOW show all around. It gets 4th because with nit picking I can find at least one thing I like better in other Crown 2011-2015 shows. I also don't see what changes it brought to the activity. Was it the best show in 2013? most definitely. Was I excited Crown got a championship? Absolutely.

5. 2011 Cadets- This show was a lot of fun and had great GE. The concept of angels vs. demons with different uniforms was money. This show did come in a time when the Cadets were expected to medal (even after 06 and 10) or even win. After all they are the 2nd most winning corps of all time.

Those are definitely killer shows. I love that you put Bloo no. 1.  I thought Down Side Up was incredible. Bluecoats might not have been as clean as SCV 2018, Carolina in 2013, or even The Cadets and Phantom, but the design of Bloo's 2016 show was a benchmark in the activity that many corps today are following (as they do with BD).  For me I would rank them:

  1. Bluecoats 2016 - A truly benchmark show for DCI. A show that has changed a lot minds about props, uniforms/costumes, electronics, etc.  See my remarks above for Bloo.
  2. Carolina Crown 2013 - I was in love with this show from day one. There is really nothing to complain about or nit pick. It has a fantastic music book, incredible brass line, amazing guard, and the staging and drill are pretty close to flawless. This was Carolina at their best. The body movement, the integration, the powerful impact moments, it all created a level of General Effect that never let down. And the Ballad is one of my favs from this decade.
  3. The Cadets 2011 - I think from a total design perspective this was nearly a perfect show. Drill, music, guard, theatrics, and theme all came together. It was the last time we truly remember what it was like to see the old "Garfield" corps at Finals. They had an early lead in 2015 only to make many mistakes down the stretch, and while I do like their 2012 and 2013 shows, I feel 2011 was the last time we saw classic Cadets at Finals.
  4. Phantom Regiment 2008 - One of my favorite shows ever. Theatrical, powerful, incredibly staged, and the performance levels are solid to really good. The show took most of the season to build and develop, but what we got at Finals was amazing. It terms of entertainment it might be no. 1 on this list, but I rank it below Bloo, Crown, and Cadets for minor reasons. Mainly I feel the top 3 here are better overall visual programs and they match Phantom's excellent music score in quality, construction, and demand (even if you don't find them as entertaining).
  5. Santa Clara Vanguard 2018 - This show certainly has one of the best endings I have seen in DCI competition, much like Phantom 2008. I found the show somewhat uneven from front to back, enjoying the back portion much more. From a performance perspective, SCV is likely no. 1 here considering the quality of their brass, percussion, visual proficiency, and guard. From that perspective, either Cadets or Carolina would be no. 2. But much like with Phantom, they absolutely needed to refine their ending (of just finish it) in order keep the Blue Devils at bay. The changes Phantom made also helped them jump to the lead at the very end. Most of the season I was not sold on the opening two section of Vanguard's show, despite their monster performance captions. It is a fantastic show, deserved to win, and has a killer ending.

This is my exact ratings as well, for mainly the same reasons. Check with me again in a couple of months and I might shuffle it a bit, but I do that all the time.

Thanks! And if we extend backwards into the 2008 season, also the Cavaliers (once) and Phantom Regiment (twice if Allentown counts as one event).

I pointed out in another recent thread how a literary critic once argued that the greatest books don't influence other great books; they are imitated only by lesser writers. Curious to see how drum corps historians 20 years from now feel about the influence of Bloo '16.
