When Judges Go Bad: Who Really Should Have Won

Recommended Posts

I know more than some and less than quite a few but, even with all the knowledge and expertise DCI assembles for Championship week judging, sometimes they just get it wrong.

Fix DCI's Champions list. Rewrite history. Name the corps that should have won but didn't (1995 Blue Devils). Or defend "unpopular" champions that you are certain were indeed the correct choice (2019 Blue Devils). Or don't defend any of your choices. You are king here, and your opinion is beyond reproach.

For me, I went back to 1987, since that is the oldest year I have seen all 12 Finalist shows.

1988 Madison Scouts
1989 Phantom Regiment

2015 Blue Devils (Ink) -- At the time, I was unfamiliar with Into The Woods.  Now having seen multiple productions, I have a much greater appreciation for this show and see why it bested Inferno.

The biggest travesty for me was 1989. Granted, SCV’s Phantom of the Opera was a beast of epic proportions, but Phantom Regiment got robbed by .4 points, mainly because SCV played much of the same music from the year before. You can disagree if you like, but my judgement is beyond reproach, according to the post guidelines! 😄

Two of my all time favorite shows are 89 Phantom and 89 SCV, and I can watch them back to back and feel the judges had it right and another time, the judges got it wrong. However, the year I really felt Phantom was robbed was 1979. The musical selection was superb, the color guard was never better, the drill amazing.

so - since I am king

I disagree with your take on 87 - two weeks prior to finals SCV had it. Cadets worked extremely hard and I believe rightfully took it by an inch on finals night. Both were terrific

I agree with 2009 Crown. Looking back I see HOW they were beat - but being there live it was a magical 3 days from Crown & I personally felt they overtook BD at semis and again at finals. I got the feeling the scores just didn't keep up

2007 is the year I disagree with strongly. I know people didn't like the narration - but personally felt that Cadet corps 1-2 pointed BD on finals night. That was a magical performance and even the BD fans around me agreed as did the tv announcers. Still really shocked they didn't take it.

2019 - I felt BD was grossly over scored in GE - JMO. Super clean though!

I otherwise agree with all these - they typically get it right!

Yes, but to my 16 year old mind that year, Regiment was infallible. They were the corps of destiny and were clearly robbed.

The ones I'd change:

1989 -Phantom Regiment

1996 - no tie, just Phantom Regiment

2008 - Blue Devils (The judges fell for the hype, Phantom was SO dirty. Another emotional win)

2016 - Carolina Crown (DSU had no business winning imo, too dirty. Another emotional win)
