Favorite City

Recommended Posts

Since the 1970's many cities held competitions....Marion, Butler, Toledo, Lynn, Allentown, Whitewater and many others. In your opinion, what was your favorite and why?

1) Allentown, because my DCA corps won three titles there in the years I was with the corps. And it's where I started announcing championships for DCA.

2) Lynn, because my local-circuit junior corps went to several World Opens there, and it's where I saw my first big shows (World Open in 1970 and '71).

2a) Marion... my junior corps went to two U.S. Opens, and the atmosphere was wonderful. That town and the surrounding area really rolled out the red carpet for all the corps.

Whitewater.

Especially in the 70s. That town, that stadium and those dorms where many corps stayed just oozed drum corps.

I was just thinking about Kitchener/Waterloo and The Golden Triangle Invitational. Talk about variety...C Class corps to Open and Senior corps! Dutchboy Cadets to Guelph RoyalAires. Tons of audience members too

1970's Marion Ohio - good competition

1970's Butler Pennsylvania - good people

1970's Watkins Glen New York - good fun

1970's Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario - good variety

A little more on why Whitewater was the Drum Corps Mecca of its day in my opinion.

Not only did drum corps completely take over and own that small town for a few days in August be it for DCI weekend or DCI Midwest, you couldn't help but to meet up and BS with members from other corps. 1976 Midwest was so neat. Our 5 snares jammed with the Blue Devils 10 snares (including a teenaged Scott Johnson) and I believe it was the Fox Valley Raiders 5. 20 total.  We played each others' warmup exercises and the Devils taught us real quick a few licks from One Eyed Sailor.  It was one of those experiences that stays with you for a lifetime.
