What Four Cities.........?

Recommended Posts

Any city is safe, and any city is dangerous depending on where you go. If you're in Chicago, and you go to the Austin neighborhood, or Englewood, then yeah, it's dangerous, but that's many miles away from any stadium that would be used, as well as where most people would choose to spend time when not at a DCI show.

Generalizing cities as safe or dangerous needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I've spent a great deal of time in St. Louis, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Indy, Chicago, etc. If you pay enough attention and do even the smallest amount of research it's easy to avoid areas that have high crime.

Simply stating a city is dangerous because of what's on the news or in documentaries doesn't paint a realistic picture.

For example: https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/blog/highest-murder-rate-cities-2018

On here, Chicago is in at #25, with 768 murders for 2,704,958. Hardly at the top. Elkhart, IN is actually higher per capita in murders.

It helps to put things into context before completing trashing certain place.

Last years top 12 are actually as follows:

1. East St. Louis, IL

2. Chester,PA

3. Camden, NJ

4. St. Louis, MO

5. Gary, IN

6. West Memphis, AR

7. Baltimore, MD

8. Flint, MI

9. Detroit, MI

10. New Orleans, LA

11. Salisbury, NC

12 Danville, VA

But driving to and from through LA traffic would not be fun.

No one can deny L.A. traffic, but if you stay in or near Pasadena traffic isn’t an issue especially on Saturday night when finals are held.  The Rose Bowl may be cost prohibitive for DCI, I don’t know, but a change in venue is overdue.

Who wants to keep going to Indianapolis?

It could also inject some life-blood into the Southern California drum corps scene. Besides the Kingsmen and Velvet Knights, when’s the last time a corps from So Cal made finals?

The idea is to grow the activity.  And with 10 million people in the greater LA area, the media capital of the world, where is the best location to host finals in terms of return on investment and long term growth?

It ain’t Whitewater.

Las Vegas at the new Raiders stadium. The heat issue was largely dealt with by a DCP'er who actually lives there who pointed out two important factors#

1) The time of year DCI is held is a low point of the convention season, which means

2) Hundreds of thousands of square feet of unused convenrion space which could be used for rehearsals.

The question is who will own the stadium.

This came up when Giants/Jets built Met Life.

They had considered putting on a roof.

But,I was old by representatives of the Giants that,if they did,the NFL,not the teams. control when the roof can be open or closed for games

The Giants/Jets  feel playing outside in bad weather is an advantage.

So no roof.

Buffalo is the same.

They tout playing outside in bad weather.

If the facility is not owned by the team they may want a roof for year

round events, even if it has to stay closed for Bills' games in bad weather.

If the Bills build it,they have to decide is playing outdoors in bad

weather is enough of an advantage to limit the stadium's use.

Any new stadiums now are money makers, They have closed door deals with the NFL that if they secure a new stadium they get the mother of all events, A Super Bowl... You'd bet that any new stadium being built in Buffalo will have stipulations from the City and local Commerce and tourism industry that the stadium be a viable Super Bowl draw and since the last Rain drench superbowl between the Colts and Bears most of the Superbowls have gone to New Stadiums, that are domed. The exceptions are stadiums that have good weather in February.

Well we did get a Super Bowl at Met Life.

Like I posted,it comes down to priorities.

If Buffalo feels playing outdoors in bad weather is essential, then no dome.

The only alternative is to have a retractable roof, which is a lot more money, and have the NFL give up control

of when a stadium roof can be open

I understand what you say but you can’t look at it from only the fans view.  All the corps with their equipment are moving around for about a week.! And where is Open Class being held? SoCal corps may be around, just stuck in traffic.
