History of Percussion Caption Heads

Also, the stick rests on the fingernaiI on the ring finger. I thought SCV invented that left hand grip in the early seventies?

That's a really good question actually. I'm sure Float and some of the other guys out there know the history at least in unofficial terms. At some point, someone (maybe Scott Brown or one of those cats) introduced us (I don't even remember if it was a camp or what) to changing the grip pressure in the thumb and "meaty part of the palm" to increase speed. Maybe I was just way behind the times, but for me it made a huge difference. In retrospect it probably should have been natural to do that, even considering how very UNNATURAL traditional grip is.

Matched grip is unnatural to me. I HATED matched grip, only had to use it 1 year.

Complete! Thank you Jay Wise! Hopefully I transferred your descriptions

Jay was our middle-man. If you have any questions about the list, feel free to PM me. Now you know why I made my comment earlier about titles. 😂

Oh I agree. But drummers are strange creatures. We find it natural because it's what we do. But if you hand a pair of drum sticks to someone who isn't a drummer, their natural instinct will be to use matched grip. I definitely prefer traditional as well. Although besides the visual aspects of it, I think most will agree that there is not a true advantage to using it. When snare lines started tilting their tubs (for what...like 3 seasons,) I got kinda excited for a second. I thought it was kinda cool. The shine wore off as soon as literally EVERY high school marching band did it as well.

At some point pre-Marty Hurley with Phantom was Jim Nevermann.  I don't know which year(s) specifically.

74 and 75, I believe.

Also the list is showing Fred Sanford at SCV in '76, but I seem to recall that Fred went to Madison that year (and only for that year). Scouts/Vanguard alums, please correct me if I'm mis-remembering.

It would be neat (although probably virtually impossible because of licensing) to see a transcription book of all the solo's from the 70's, 80's and 90's. There are some fantastic percussion solo's from those times.
