Males vs Females demographic.

Recommended Posts

In the DCI News "5 Things we already know about the 2020 Madison Scouts" article in mentions in #5 ...." He also said that female interest in the first year that all genders will be able to audition for the corps is strong, slightly exceeding the average demographic of males vs. females across DCI corps."

Is there a DCI link, or other public access link that shares the stats on this demographic?

Sorry...too lazy to find on my own.

They've since taken it off the website, but looking on Wayback Machine, in 2017 they listed it as 66% male.

https://web.archive.org/web/20170606092633/http://www.dci.org/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=33500&ATCLID=209979117

Showcasing the best of the best:
  • Each year, more than 8,000 students audition for the fewer than 3,500 positions available in top-tier DCI member corps
  • More than 5,000 members directly participate annually
  • 66 percent are male
  • Average age is 19.4
  • 72 percent are full-time college students
  • 59.6 percent of the current college students are pursuing music education degrees, while 65 percent of those that indicated they are high school students intend to major in music education

Now that is ONE change in Drum Corps I definitely like!  The percentage of full-time college students was nothing close to 72% BITD.

Very happy to see that

Thanks MikeN.

My mind thinks: are some corps [excluding, obviously single-gender membership] reporting annually as to their breakdown regarding the demographic?

I think it's a darn shame that the drum corps activity is now only open to college students and music majors.  Yes, I realize there are some members who are not college students, but by-and-large it's a college student activity now.

You forgot the word "rich" as in "rich college-student activity" with drum corps tuitions at the $5K mark annually and non-State school tuitions above $50K annually before room and board.

Did I miss something? Has Open Class been eliminated?
