What are you looking forward to?

Recommended Posts

Hopefully this is not a rehash of an old thread, but what do you look forward to most during the Drum Corps season, besides the obvious of the actual groups shows and performances?

For me, it is the once a year friendships that I have developed with fellow fans over the years. There is a couple dudes who my buddy and I met several years ago during finals week. We sat in front of them, and all of us kept hearing the others making comments similar to the other pair. We struck up a conversation during the marathon prelims day, and every year we get back together, grab a meal or two together during the week, and pick up as if no time has passed. It is an odd friendship, in the fact that we do not talk much, sometimes at all, until Finals week the next year. Even in years when our seats are not next to each other, we seek each other out, and pick back up. These are the types of things that make this activity more than just the performances on the field.

I agree... the friendships/relationships. Old friends, and new friends. Even catching up for a just a few minutes, or waving hello from afar to a familiar face.

When I worked the DCA title shows all those years... I would try to spend a minute or two with some of the older folks who ran the circuit, ran the corps, or just were familiar faces... because I never knew if that would be the last time I saw some of them.

Totally agree with Fran. For me, it's more about seeing old corps buddies gathered around the Flo. The thrills of the performances are the icing on the cake.

I’m looking forward to a “Reformation” in Drum Corps. So many props, so many gimmicks, so much running around sideways (even snares!), so much Pit (how many xylophones & marimbas do you really need?), so much overproduction that it detracts from the overall raw power and visual beauty of the brass ensemble.

It doesn’t need to be 1974 again either, but, c’mon, less is more!

Overproduction. Yes. Such a good term to describe it. I was watching about five minutes of BOA today (that’s all I could handle). The body contortions adding absolutely nothing to the music other than simultaneous demand, which somehow became a perceived must.... just unwatchable. The soundtrack in the background. The way over the top emoting. It’s hard not to laugh. It’s become so silly.

Pretty much this.  I appreciate it but seriously, if it adds nothing it ads nothing.  OMG they lunged again!!!!!  Ya, don't see that 1000x at a show.....

Absolutely! A lot of visual distraction with body movements and angry face. If it doesn’t fit don’t force it.

I listened to as much as I could of the BOA show today while working.  I have no idea who/what where/when I heard.  Some of the corps were as expected for high school band.  Some of them blew my mind, it was wonderful!   Can’t wait for the next two days.

I agree there is a lot of over production.  But I still love it and do think it will eventually swing in the other direction.

Really looking forward to the release of 2019 videos and to the upcoming season of Winterguard.  Starting to watch old shows on YouTube in anticipation : )
