TerriTroop
I’m a Trooper alum but I’m not in the know about the inner workings of the corps. I presume this is based on a connection to the community band folks in Costa Rica and I also presume that they are looking for talent outside of the high school age range - folks who can likely be here during the school year in CR. And because it is a partnership with a group in CR I also presume there has been the offer of space and maybe even some cost deferment. I think this is awesome and I hope it bears fruit.

jonnyboy
How to have a recruiting event in a foreign country: One person, presumably with connections in said country, and possibly already traveling there, grabs a few brochures and gets in front of the hornlike/drumline. They talk about DCI. They get on a plane and come home. A relationship is born. Maybe one that blossoms. Pioneer had several kids from South Africa. Other corps host kids. It happens. You get one and others follow. In the 90s we got a kid from Holland and several of his corps mates followed suit in the next few years. Same with Canada, Japan etc. Heck, this works with any University or High School. Get one kid to march, they go home and sell it to the others. Listening to NPR a few weeks ago, the President of a small (under 1000) college in CT was traveling to New Mexico, Arizona and Texas to recruit kids. He brought a few kids from previous recruiting trips (that had chosen his school) that spoke Spanish/English and the high school kids related well. Several stated that although they never heard of XYX University before that day they would be applying.

xandandl
My yearly preview of Tournament of Roses website to prepare for what marching bands will be in Pasadena (and the TV) this year shows an annual variety of Costa Rican entries (to match those coming from Mexico, the Orient, and Europe.) Here's the list for 2020 and 2021 trying to surpass what Pacific Crown did last year. https://tournamentofroses.com/20-marching-bands-selected-to-join-2020-rose-parade/ A google of Wikipedia also gives what marching bands have already been approved for 2021 including Costa Rican units. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_Parade_marching_bands Edited December 31, 2019 by xandandl
