as football programs end, Drum Corps will march on

Recommended Posts

Interesting story from Minnesota this past week -

2 smaller colleges in Minnie are pulling the plug on their men's football programs -

Makes you wonder if drum corps and marching bands should start laying out their performance fields without yard markers - the grid iron could become irrelevant!

Already started in the Northeast for high schools as numbers of high school participants in tackle football dwindle. CT alone saw a dozen less football programs in the past two years.

There was a time when Blackstone- Millville (Mass.) had no football team but did have an enthusiastic soccer team and a very fine h.s. band who played at the soccer games between periods.  They marched on the soccer field quite well and did wonderfully in USSBA and NESBA. They still do well even though they have a football team. https://www.bmmamusic.org/

That is really neat!

I think the activity is ready to move on from the grid iron - I would rather just see a performing surface with no yard lines -

no tarps please - let's just have a performing surface "field" with no striping - or at most a soccer pitch --

The performers use the markings of the field extensively as reference points when performing. Going back to the early DCI days of only the 50 yard line being marked sn't likely.

Pffft.  Meanwhile Univ. of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) is moving up to Division 1 in football from Division 3.  Football is hardly dying.

Interesting as familiar with Div III and Div II schools and thought number of scholarships for athletes was the big money difference. And believe Div II and III championship games are this weekend in Texas.

edit: checked and the two MN schools mentioned are Div II
