Looking at Encorps' Facebook page - only 741 likes. Facebook has about a 2/3 penetration in the US, so extrapolate and about 1000 people like Encorps. The "big" corps have 150k-200k likes. Also looking at the 2018 YouTube vids versus 2019, they look like they dropped in size by a half. I don't know about their history other than that, but it looks like Encorps failed themselves rather than a vast DCI conspiracy.

Nothing new here.  The open class formerly Div 2/3 formerly Class A have always been treated like red headed ######## stepchildren.

I agree that the issue is very old but I do believe that in the case of encorps, we are finally seeing direct proof of what is going on behind the scenes with regards to open class treatment. Without an open class, there is no world class. And by the looks of things, DCI is about to have nearly half of its open class corps population wiped out by its abrupt and one sided policies combined with the negligence of DCI to help guide and support open class corps growth. That’s the main problem seen specifically outlined in Encorps Facebook post.

Even if some open class corps survive this, which I’m pretty sure there will be a few, Dci and its structure will turn into DCA where the big boys are all showcased and given praise and attention whilst the underdogs/open class are so small in numbers it brings into question why we should even have divisions.

sounds like a G-7 re-run.

Why can’t these corps with small numbers just go max out the SoundSport program? Honestly, I’m not a fan of 37-member outdoor marching units in huge stadiums.

“We’re here! Let us in!” doesn't really cut it for me. DCI is set up in such a way that there really aren’t any avenues for recourse when an organization doesn’t get its way.

Encorps needs to spend more time figuring out why they can’t find 55 members, instead of crying about DCI operations.

It sounds like DCI's member corps have decided that there should be fewer drum corps in existence.

There's not been a contention that DCI has limited the number of corps in any way.  It has, however, increased the minimum requirements for those corps to participate in DCI functions and contests.  Open Class corps of a minimum size are invited to sustain the WC tour as guest performers and, after doing so successfully for a minimum number of seasons, said corps can petition to become a member of WC.

I'm 100% confident that the member corps would LOVE to have 100 corps competing to reach WC status.

I understand the point you are trying to make but I think that the key point here is DCI and it’s general treatment and management of its open class members. Essentially encorps has everything set right and to quote the Facebook post, DCI gave them the green light to fully participate in the up coming season. However, DCI failed to make open class corps aware of the new rules of the 55 minimum rule. They had to consult other open class corps directors to find out the truth. Then when trying to find an anwser to what would happen to them if they didn’t meet the membership requirements DCI stayed silent and didn’t cooperate with them.

Are we seeing any of this at the world class level? Anwser right now is no.

However, if this continues going on, open class will cease to exist or be too small to be considered its own division.

World Class corps are obviously on a different level than open class corps. That’s just a fact. However to go as far to be completely negligent towards open class corps ( or at least the ones they don’t care about ) and only care about the open class drops that are basically world class corps at this point ( e.g. Spartans, blue devils B, Vanguard cadets, legends, gold ) and the actual world class corps themselves, then there is a problem and it jeopardizes the fate of the jr drum corps activity.

I get that DCI doesn’t want to dedicate a lot of resources to smaller corps. But if you can’t field 55 members, I wonder how serious your organization really is.

The leadership of Encorps and the others deserve huge amounts of praise and kudos for having gotten to where they did.  Attaining membership should NOT be easy!

The discussion about 55/100 was being discussed several years ago.

They'd love it so much they just raised the bar for corps to participate?

How many corps was DCI turning away from championships in 1972?

Agreed. You can do everything right and it still doesn't guarantee success, just a shot at it.
