Any Instrument Policy

Proposed by: Kathy Black, DCI Board of Directors

Summary: This proposal would allow the use of any instrument, including woodwinds, effective for the 2021 season.

On the record: “Opening the drum corps activity to young musicians currently excluded is consistent with the DCI mission to bring the life-enriching benefits and enjoyment of marching music performing arts to more people worldwide.”

A woke civil rights attorney (from the Forestry Service) is now the Board chair for DCI, but does anyone on the Board have at least a bachelors degree in Business from an accredited university???  What business model supports throwing away brand recognition to become like their lessor-common competitor, and thus risk alienating a substantial percentage of their customer base?

Why doesn’t DCI just merge with BOA and call it a day?  By allowing all instrumentation you’ve now created a competitor to BOA. In one or two more years, finances will be such that it won’t make sense to have competing organizations so they will probably become one.

No, it is hardly a competitor. Their seasons are different timeframes, BOA is based on HS bands participating, so each ensemble is limited to those attending those high schools. DCI corps members are more college age than HS age.

There is always room for the best to exist, IMO. Also, there is a market for summer programs for students, such as Interlochen (which costs a LOT more than tuition at a DCI corps).

I think it’s ironic that embedded within this DCP page has is an ad for “Musical Saws for Sale.”

Why not.

This is the “slow boiling frog” problem. DCI has allowed its identity to be whittled away ever so slightly each year.  DCI wandered so far from the roots of activity that there’s almost no recognizable “ground truth.” Synthesizers should never have been allowed, nor should electric guitars or things that weren’t uniquely drum and bugle corps instruments. Now there’s so many exceptions that have been allowed there just isn’t any identity to the activity anymore.

Yes, there is no need for such non-corps items like mellophones and contras either. Or more than one valve, if at all. Plus, get rid of those multi-tenors. No drummer needs more than one, as it existed when I started in drum corps. And why do those guard members actually mover their flags around and toss their rifles?

Does anyone know when the vote is or when we will know any updates?

Instructors/Designers vote is at 4pm ET today. The Voting Membership will probably vote on the proposals that pass the first caucus tomorrow.

Here’s the bottom line - for those of us not happy about this and threatening to leave, management doesn’t care. The writing is on the wall and they feel they need to evolve to continue. They’ll miss us for a brief moment, but won’t shed a tear or look in the rear view mirror because they feel this is the direction the activity is moving. To them this is a passing thing, just like adding concert brass instruments and electronics. To some of us, it’s the line in the sand that many of us drew 50 years ago and said “cross this, and we’re done”. THIS IS HUGE!

Harsh reality, they don’t care nearly as much as you do, and they know you’ll be to replaced by new fans and members.

Yeah it’s harsh, but it is what it is.

Fun how a few weeks ago someone posts a Vandegrift HS video and we think its great, but if DCI adds woodwinds, it will suck. The lowest scoring  will be better than Vandegrift. DCI is good because they commit more than a year to producing 11-12 minutes of intense choreography.
