Complain about us dinos all you want, but back then corps fees weren't 2K per year. Why? Well today's instructors (if you want to call them that) are a big reason. They keep proposing rule changes to advance their own creative egos and almost every one of them in some way adds to the cost. From podiums to props to electronics to instrumentation. I remember podiums. Now, they're towers.

I am late to this conversation, but besides Yamaha and maybe Jupiter, what other manufacturers make a full line of woodwind instruments? Would this make Conn-Selmer a player? Or would you have to have separate contracts with Pearl and Buffet?

Yep...and when some of the drum majors (the Troopers come to mind) actually marched part of the show. There would have been a hole in the Sunburst without the DM in there. Was just going to mention my DVDs from 1972 DCA.... along with that start and end line.... glad that was over by 1974 when I joined.

LOL And then there were those drum majors who marched ON the box podium and created an audible "THUMP" to keep time with every footfall. 1980's BlueDevils had a huge, hollow wooden box that resonated like a Buick. 1

We marched all over except for concert. Had to march in 65 during concert since we started closer to the sideline, then marched to another location further back for the next minute or so.

Could be wrong here... but from what I recall, one of the first podiums was used by DCA's Hawthorne Caballeros, circa 1970. Jim Russo, who took over as Cabs' lead drum major in 1970, was not as tall as his predecessors... Chuck Bishop and Ralph Silverbrand. 1
