2020 Rules Proposals

She had absolutely no way to reconcile her claims that the Task Force was assembled to explore new revenue streams, yet there is nothing in the explanations she has that identify a single dollar of new revenue that could be achieved by changing the "available instrumentation" of the ensembles.  She contradicts herself in saying that they are not proposing to increase the size of the corps.  They really screwed up by trying to hide a "design & instrumentation" rule proposal under the guise of "we need to make more money."  There's zero logic there.

Anyone care to take a stab at how allowing "all instruments" would contribute to new revenue in any way?

Exactly. Tho she did throw in a not yet on membership increase

"...hundreds of thousands of comments..."

"...I think certainly the reaction of people around the world will be discussed and factored in."

"...my name's on it, not theirs."

Here's part of the beauty of having the Chair's name on the proposal: The instructors and directors can discuss and debate among themselves without ANY single one of them having to defend their position.  All the heat falls on the Chair and this revenue committee.  I think it's brilliant.

Long gone are the days when every vote seemed to be another step along a pre-planned "vision" by a single director with ego and gravitas (earned or otherwise).  Interesting that there's not a single director or instructor who the pitch-fork chaser can go after.  The Leader of the activity is Kathy Black and she takes all the heat.

It's called Leadership to sit down and take that interview.  I think the process required it and, by all accounts, she has stood up to it and spoken well of the fans despite the incoming rounds she's taking.

I think those making personal comments about her personally are, at least, way off base and, at worst, callous.  She loves drum corps, too, so shut up.  It's not your gig.

That parts cool. It’s the contradictions every few sentences that irk me

I feel excluded. They’re turning it to summer marching band circuit which I won’t watch. I’m a victim. Hold me.

Yes that’s a shot at today’s culture. But it’s also true I’m out. And therefore, in some way, by including WW they are excluding those who find the change a bridge too far. Or that red line. However you say it.

Not yet - this weekend. And 2021.

So some news from that video, the task force voted to bring this proposal forward. She named one corps director. David Glasgow of the Bluecoats. Who else is on that task force?

And I suspect all of your #NeverWW will boo the Bluecoats as they come onto the field now right?

No. Because we won’t be there.
And I’ll add it so you don’t have to - and we won’t be missed.  I may still come here to irritate people though. Haven’t thought that one all the way through yet.

Watched the interview with Kathy Black.  Clearly the decision to go "any instrument" was based on increasing revenue for DCI.

How about this - if DCI goes "any instrument," I won't spend another red cent on DCI tickets, DVDs, member fees, etc.  In the past decade with two marching members, attending shows, buying overpriced T shirts, etc etc I would say I have easily spent close to $75,000 supporting this activity and it's member units.  I would rather support our local high school marching band than a bunch of over-inflated international marching bands.

Call it a $75K revenue loss for my part.

As far as the "incomprehensible" policy of allowing electric guitars and violins versus acoustic, DCI is paying the price for bargaining away it's soul piecemeal.  Electric guitars and violins should never have been allowed in the first place, and you wouldn't be facing this problem.  They added little or nothing to the performance.  Just served to water down your brand a little bit at a time.  Now DCI is forgoing it's venerable identity en masse.  Nice knowing you DCI.

The opportunity cost in a new 15 year old live long fan and a 65 year old fan who is on the way out is simply to see why this initiative to seek new revenue streams is important to DCI.

That 15 year old similar to you #NeverWW will have a lifelong enjoyment and fulfillment from DCI. 50 more years of buying tickets going to shows, possibly auditioning, a new set of eyeballs for the sponsors of DCI.

It's an opportunity cost that for DCI simply can't be ignored any longer.

And it's the very reason why everything in our world is marketed towards the younger generation. There is simply more potential money to be made from attracting an 18 year old than there is a 65 year old.
