Cadets and YEA new path forward

A donation can be made a restricted gift, but the reality is that non-profits shuffle money to fit needs all the time, so if someone wants to specifically target their drum corps for the donation, waiting until they have a formal non-profit corporation set up that ONLY does Cadets would be safer than throwing anything into the YEA coffers right now.

Probably not what they want to hear, but the reality is that YEA will soon be essentially a marching band contest circuit with a mountain of debt that far outweighs their annual net revenues from USB/.

The best way to be as reasonably sure that this does not happen is to give the restricted gift and stipulate that this is in addition to money already collected and budgeted for a specific purpose. An example that comes to mind is a local company that donates money to schools for library books. If this company gives $500 for books, the school has to show it spent $500 or more on books. This is also common with private schools that give financial aid.

Completely off-topic - but I can envision a show that is 'Jerry Springer meets Drum Corps Planet'

Or Maury Povich, perhaps?

Presuming this recap is somewhat accurate, I'm failing to see what's bad here:

Recap:

  • Introduce the leadership team - Denise, Justin, Brad, Ron
  • March 31 transition to a new organization
  • 501 c 3 not yet handled but definitely will by March 31
  • "Most" copyrights to show music have been obtained
  • Guard is 50% contracted
  • Percussion full
  • Brass "down to single-digit holes"
  • Brass knows 33% of the show
  • Things are "going great" WRT the corps and the show
  • Spring training site TBD
  • "95%" of sponsors are "the same;" Denise "can't disclose" the few changes
  • New board TBA March 31
  • No new fundraising initiatives; same stuff: M&G, Power the Cadets; March-a-thon forms

Stupid question from a biology professor who has no idea how finance works - How long does it take to "handle", set-up, establish, or whatever the correct term-of-art is a 501 c 3?  Is that something that can be accomplished in ~5 weeks?

According to this site, the length of time varies per applicant/application.

As I posted, I was involved with a 501 (c) (3) application involving a historic house.

The County Historical Society provided a lot guidance.

But even then it was an arduous, time consuming process.

Eventually they ended up selling the property.

Based on what they went through, even with outside help from an agency familiar with the process,I would hope the Cadets are using an outside firm to handle the application.
