How Did You Start in Drum Corps?

Recommended Posts

I started playing drums in elementary school (4th grade) in the fall of 1962.

My dad was a member of the Livingston NJ VFW post, who sponsored a Garden State Circuit corps, the Hilltoppers.

He took me to my first drum corps show in Sept 1963, and I was a judge runner at that show. The Hilltoppers started a feeder corps, so I joined them in the winter of 63/64.

The corps eventually split up due to Post politics, with most of the field corps becoming the Imperial Guardsmen in 1965.

I marched with the remaining Hilltoppers as a parade corps 65-67.

After the 67 summer, seeing that the Hilltoppers were going nowhere fast to make it to the field, my dad finally let me join the Imperial Guardsmen, where I marched/competed with in 68 and 69.

After the 69 season, I joined Garfield, where I marched 70, 71 and 72.
