Time for DCI to cancel season?

Recommended Posts

Hard to see how drum corps happens this summer. Almost impossible to imagine enough housing and one positive test on tour would bring down the season anyway. Put a fork in it, the season is not going to happen and some corps may not survive that.

Nah. Tuition has only started to roll in; refunds would be a small % of anticipated tuition revenue for the year.

Likewise, tour expenses have not yet kicked in. Corps spend 75% of their annual budget between May and August. From a business perspective, drum corps is a cash-management exercise. If a corps cancels its tour, then it also cancels the vast bulk of its expenses: instruction, food, fleet. Bingo will float the admin until the arrival of the 2021 audition season in October.

Most corps have collected at least half of tuition by now, have already incurred expenses that leave them far less cash on hand than they could refund.

Do you think parents would just sit by if the season was cancelled and say... that's OK, just give us back whatever you can?  Nope.  There are contracts in place and the corps could easily be seen in breach.  Not sure how many corps would be willing to open up their books to show exactly what has already been spent and what obligations still remain, in order to justify less-than-full refunds.  You have to take into consideration that lots and lots of people are losing jobs and if this goes months longer we will be in a full-blown recession.  People won't easily wall away from thousands of dollars when they are feeling desperate.

it's too soon but they should make contingency plans - and April camps should be virtual to keep costs and exposure down

prior to end of April is the time to pull the plug - well prior to move ins etc.

and thus the issue with month long spring training comes to light

There is no way a season happens. None.

Best hope is that it can be restarted next year, but a lot of things will have to go right for that to happen as well.

We are just at the very earliest beginning stage of what is to come. There are undoubtedly thousands and thousands walking around with the virus, many unknowingly transferring it to those more vulnerable. The consequences are likely to be more than anyone can bear, but we will have to bear it.

All that coupled with the unprecedented situation of economies worldwide just coming to a sudden halt - how do you even process it? Once the outbreak is contained, restarting the engine is not going to be a quick process. But people are resilient and hopefully the good that can come out of it will be a unifying moment. Then we can try to find ways to bring back the things we love that have had to go on hiatus for more pressing matters.

California has 6 counties in "shelter in place".

Bergen County in N.J. is closing all malls, and trying to close most offices and construction

companies, based on "moral authority" (That may not fly in court).

Ohio cancelled its in person voting.

As has been posted, one person comes down with this on tour and

bye-bye tour  anyway.

There's also potential liability for places that house corps.

Can't go into details, but a lawyer I know was saying his firm has

fielded calls from a number of people wanting to sue for "lost wages",based

on an exposure at a public institution.

They didn't get infected, but had to "self quarantine" for 14 days.

Someone from a corps test positive, the place they're staying at could be sued.

Would they win, probably not,but you still have to deal with the suit.

Even when  infections drop, everything that has been shut down, has to get up

and running again.

That won't happen overnight.

There's just too much uncertainty right now to tour this year.
