year1buick
Just a quick review of a drug reference guide does show that chloroquine phosphate, specifically, is also administered as a drug. So it’s not just for fish tanks. (Just as Coumadin isn’t just for rats.) But taking it upon themselves to down some from a bottle formulated for use in fish tanks wasn’t particularly smart. edit: I believe it’s used as an algicide Edited March 25, 2020 by year1buick
Brian Tuma
I don’t think a physician can prescribe a drug for a usage outside of that drug’s intended target. The FDA would have to approve it’s usage under the Orphan Drug category, no?

That why there’s a label warning to not drink dishwashing detergent or don’t use your blow dryer in the bathtub. Hey now, don't rule out that blow dryer just yet! Obviously they still have to practice within the standard of care and within the guidelines of their professional and licensing agencies. Plus insurance may not cover off label.

Thanks for the clarification. I was wrong about orphan drugs. That’s a whole different subject. Edited March 25, 2020 by Brian Tuma

Yea olde PDR? Have a bunch of those in the cellar from my father in laws store (independent pharmacist). Can just imagine the misinformation if someone started using that to spout off “facts” on the internet. For example, I use my phone to look up stuff in our Oral Path book all the time. (It’s quite the doorstop in paper form.)

Yeah first the previous doctor would walk around with his laptop and that was a change. (Can still hear my dad asking his if it was attached to his docs body. And answer was “might as well be”). Now new doc at a teaching practice and when asked a question either her (yeah her and about half my age 😳) or doctor in training whip out the cell phone. Sometimes wonder if they’re having a typing contest to see who gets it first. 😛
