COVID-19 Update: Vanguard Bingo

Recommended Posts

Vanguard's bingo is down for 3 weeks and they are already asking for more donations.  At what point does the state shut down start to negatively affect Vanguards and BDs operations?  Do they rely on bingo so heavily that a several month shut down of bingo halls could throw these corps off track?

They are two of the strongest corps financially.  When and if they start struggling for money, one can only imagine what may happen with many other corps.  Granted, they have more programs going on than many corps and bigger pay rolls.

Statement from VMPA March 22, 2020

The organization is asking fans to donate to Vanguard Music and Performing Arts, especially as the ever-important bingo operation has been cancelled for the time being.

Remember Santa Clara operates in probably one of the most expensive areas in the country if not the most expensive. BD is in Concord north of the Silicone Valley  but it's not as pricey say Santa Clara Co. Hopefully their alumni will pull thru and help in hard times.

As we found in the 990 study years ago, SCV has a MAGNIFICENT financial officer who has shepherded that org to one of the strongest balance sheets in the activity.

And I guarantee you that if BD pulls POP ("######-Off Pete") out of retirement, he will scare every marching member into donating a full year's fees, and will get their parents to match the contribution!

This is a very good point.  Among corps that simply run a corps only, would it be easier to both shut down and to restart?

Are you referring to both BD and SCV to restart? These two corps are Headline corps that are the marquee of any shows they compete in.

I would imagine corps with no/few paid staff (other than summer contractors) and low overhead could easily weather a hibernation. The million dollar corps might also muster enough $$$ to keep things going.  The corps that just might suffer the most are the ones in the middle, the ones that have lots of monthly bills and not a lot of incoming money.  I'm sure some boards will have to make a decision that makes sense from a business standpoint, but hurts from a personal standpoint.

Best of luck to all.

Blue Devils vs SCV Financial Comparison Part 1 Blue Devils

I thought it would be interesting to compare these two organizations. The following information regarding the two organizations is listed below and compiled
from their websites.
They are like "Brother" "Sister" organizations sharing many functions and expenses together especially DCI West which has been held for the most part at Stanford
University in Palo Alto, Ca. because of the size of the stadium.

The BDPA SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The BDPA Scholarship Fund is to promote innovative excellence in a young person's life. It is awarded to help fund a member's education for their future career
pursuits so to enhance their BDPA performance experience.

A maximum of three $500 scholarships are awarded each year at Family Day.  Awards are selected by the BDPA Scholarship Committee which is directed by the BDPA Board of
Directors.

ENDOWMENT
For years, BDPA has relied on few sources of revenue to fund program expenses. Realizing that even a small shift in the local economy and continued pressures on our
fundraising activities could have devastating effects, the Board of Directors has moved to secure a stable foundation for our organization. In order to assure that
there will be a future for BDPA programs, we have developed a goal to create an Endowment, a savings account with a principal large enough to support our programs on
the interest alone.
