ironlips
If there were a Drum Corps Citizenship Exam, one of the required questions would be, "Who is Tommy Martin?" If you need a refresher, or just need to be refreshed: The first 4 notes? Tommy Triple tongue clinic at 11:58? Tommy As Twyla Tharp says, you've got to "earn your ancestors". If you want to be a Drum Corps citizen, you earn that by knowing the history...and those who made it. Happy Birthday, Tommy, and many more.

Fred Windish
Ah, those 1960s Era New York Skyliners. Nothing quite like that ever since! That classic uniform, the G bugles, the Swing Music, that BIG, BOLD Big City sound with Gotham City Swagger. Standing ovations popping-up throughout the show. Not just polite applause, but tear-filled roars of delight. I feel Blessed to have enjoyed those moments many times . . . in person. So, beyond Happy Birthday to Tommy Martin, I’d like to say thanks to that wonderful legacy that changed my world. To the thousands who wore that iconic uniform. This was the ‘Big League‘ of early drum corps. 👍 ‘Dare was nuttin like dat! Edited May 5, 2020 by Fred Windish

meyer
Happy Happy!! Just a comment. The photo caption says "Legion Nationals 1963" which were held in Miami; but that scoreboard says "Roosevelt Stadium" of Jersey City. Some say that Tommy had already left the Skyliners by 1963. ironlips
"Some say that Tommy had already left the Skyliners by 1963." Tom had been in the Air Force D&B Corps and is prominently featured on their signature recording from '62. He's back on the block by summer of '63. The photo is the cover of Fleetwood Album #2110, "Skyliners Through the Years", a compilation of performances from '60, '62 and '63, and does indeed show the corps at Roosevelt Stadium. The link to the Charles Frost YouTube audio, however, cues up the '63 Miami American Legion Nationals performance, recorded (and introduced on the record) by Stetson Richmond, himself. Charles just used a handy photo of the Skyliners for the visual. Click on it for the confirmation.
