Bands of America recently released their 2021 schedule. They are planning for Fall of 2021 to be "back to (new) normal."

One can hope for a normal by next fall.  It is good to see that the circuits are planning for it to happen.

The Texas State Marching Band Championships are coming up Monday and Tuesday. In the largest class, 6A, many heavy hitters opted out this year but there’s still some major schools competing - Claudia Taylor Johnson, The Woodlands, Flower Mound, Marcus and Hebron.

A Holiday Message From USBands

"Nothing could be worse than a return to normality. Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging...dead ideas....or we can walk through lightly...ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it."    Arundhati Roy

While this quote has served as a guiding star for a few of us personally over the past several months, we hope it inspires the work that we are all doing today that will make for our return to Near Normal possible in the coming year.

It is safe to say that this has been a year of sacrifice and adjustment. One can only imagine the pathway you have traveled this past year; hopefully with some moments of joy, but also acknowledging the moments of pain. Even in these darkest of moments, we know that in our corner of the arts world we will be able to once again bask in the joys of our collective presence together in a concert hall, stadium, gymnasium, practice field or band room with the privilege of being able to hear young people fill the spaces with the spirit of music.

For now, we are left to reflect on the year that was and imagine a new year of what we hope will be.

To the educators, we are all indebted to you for your tireless efforts, sacrifices, talent, imagination and creativity to stand by your students to provide for them a model to remain present, stay engaged and confront whatever may come their way with a sense of indomitable spirit and perseverance. Are there any more important life lessons we can teach in these moments of uncertainty?

To the parents, we thank you for standing by your students and giving them the support and space they need to follow their musical dreams. We know it’s difficult being a Band Mom or Band Dad in normal conditions, but this year even challenged the best in us. What wouldn’t we give for the opportunity to attend a stadium filled with band fans on a cool fall evening, or even to hustle to make the next practice or maybe even take part in the fundraiser! Let’s hope those days are just a few mere weeks away.

The virus has been cruel to so many, but none more than the students who are so passionate about music and developing as performers and human beings. Never for a moment believe that collectively the educators, parents and even those lucky enough to play a small role in your development like USBands will not move heaven and earth to give you all of the traditional experiences and opportunities you deserve and even some new ideas for the future.

Through countless conversations over the past year we have heard over and over again the desire for a return to normal. Be certain that as soon as the health and safety concerns subside, USBands will be there to lift you up, celebrate the beauty of your contribution and the generosity in which you share your talents with the world, regardless of the level of your skill or depth of your commitment.

As we stand on the precipice of another new year, 2021 will be unlike any other. We have the opportunity to “break with the past and imagine our world anew.” USBands certainly did that earlier this year with it’s reorganization and renewed commitment to excellence in all that we do. We can't wait for what's next!

We challenge each of you to take on the new year as one with tremendous opportunity and a newfound respect for the diversity, engagement and interdependence we all share as members of the local community in our schools, our neighborhoods and as a global society. We challenge you to join us to “imagine another world and be ready to fight for it.”

Best wishes to you and your family for a healthy, safe and joyous holiday season and a wonderful New Year.
