*Bridgemen placed 3rd in Prelims in 1977, were disqualified because it was found they had marched underage members, got a court injunction allowing them to compete in Finals (where they placed 4th), and then lost their case in binding arbitration, where their disqualification was upheld. Additionally, two corps tied for 12th in Prelims, so there were 13 corps in Finals.

Looking back at the earliest years, it's fascinating to see that junior corps continued to compete in other shows well after DCI championships: not only at the American Legion and/or VFW, but other shows even into September. And some of them had shows as early as mid-May.

Corrections welcome.

Offhand: Troopers 2013. XMen 2008 (by far the most tolerable of the Guidry shows). SOUTHWIND 2000.

From the past decade, Troopers 2013 was the first that came to mind for me. For a brief moment as scores were being announced, it looked like they might have made Finals.

Another one: I prefer Madison's 2016 show to Boston's, but didn't really care much for either.

Crossmen 1979.

Troopers were great in 12th place, but Crossmen should have been somewhere around 8th place.

But but they were the first and only associate champions.  What a fiasco that was.

The funny thing about early on in DCI,  because of how prelims were held, most of those 12th place corps moved up in finals.

Remembering that both 2014 and 2015 Crossmen had timing penalties at Semis because they had major technical issues delaying both semis shows. Without the penalties the scores would have been:

2014 - Crossmen 12th 86.45 -- Colts 13th 85.35

2015 -- Crossmen 12th 85.275 -- Troopers 13th 83.800 (Xmen would have tied for eleventh without the penalty).

1972 Garfield Cadets...we had a 1.8 overtime penalty as the staff diddled and diddled with the show all the way out to champs, adding and adding...but not removing much of anything.

Would have ended up  around 9th in prelims without the penalty.

This was one I remember well. Both corps were fantastic, but man did the Colts put on a show at Semifinals. They had the crowd going nuts at the end of their show.

The answer has to be 2000 Southwind. They were 12th or better in every single caption and 13th overall. The only top 12 corps in history to not make finals.

It was the GE diff that did it.  Bloo 10th at 34.80, S-dub 12th at 34.10
