Will there be a DCI 2021 season? (Read before voting... )

  1. 1. Assume both fall (marching band) and spring (WGI) marching arts are cancelled - but by January, we have three vaccines for covid-19 approved for general use, and widely deployed in ample supply. Could there still be a DCI season in 2021 under those circumstances?

    • Yes - maybe fewer shows, maybe more localized, but there could still be DCI contests in 2021.

    • No - if WGI takes 2021 off, there is zero chance of a DCI season. Fall 2021 marching band would be the first possible return of marching contests.

The vaccines will be going out, but there will undoubtedly be a lag between the time that the public gets access in April and when the school boards (or more accurately their lawyers) will start relaxing their policies on public events. I just don't see the schools cooperating in time to hold a tour this year.

they like the revenue, just saying - the lawyers will draft the contract to protect liability - public HS will lag a bit no doubt

Besides revenue what else do the school districts receive? Thinking of the balance between revenue, what ever else and safety. IOW what could be thrown in a school boards face during election time.
If it was my district I would well imagine people running against the board saying “if they did it to make money then they should just cut the budget and keep our kids safe”. Some people really anal about money around here.

The question is, can there be enough revenue, to warrant the risk.

Contract or not, a school or other entity can still be at risk.

Plus, if a contract has that kind of liability protection, can a corps afford, assuming its even available, the insurance they would need to tour.

As much as it seems easy to pinpoint current issues with a specific generation, there are so many faults across them all.  The news is full of people from older generations acting like idiots.  Every time I think of a generalization I've proving wrong and for some reason it happens soon after I make it.

What I can't stand is the attitude that people are expendable based on their age.

Idiocy knows no age or political affiliation or race or gender or sexual preferences.

Yup. Their groups will get first priority

I think you might be correct. It is known that the schools being super spreader locations for the children has not materialized. Many news outlets have covered it. At our university there have been many changes but we have also been able to hold events. I do know that many of the professors here at the university are steering clear of the any large student body events.

Then why are schools are going virtual again if it’s not spreading?

Housing, insurance and medical staff will be the huge obstacles

This is the way I look at it.

Corps X is on tour.  They are required to regularly test their members and staff.  One person tests positive.

What does Corps X have to do? I'm guessing quarantine the entire touring organization for two weeks.  That doesn't mean 180 people in one room somewhere.  It means small groups of no more than 10, isolated from each other.

Where will they do that?  Not at some random school  Maybe at a hotel, if the hotel agrees, and they might given the horrendous occupancy rates they are fighting, but the cost would be tremendous.  The corps can't pack everyone onto buses for a two day drive "home", whereupon they let everyone drift to the wind.

This scenario is why there will be no tour this summer.  My opinion, of course.
