So what was the alternate method of proving the member's age?

The member in question did not have a driver's license, thus he had no age ID on him.   However, he was a college student.  The bursar's office was open (it was a Friday).  Thank God, we had a cooperative person on the other end of the phone....colleges have dob on all students..........she confirmed his dob and that he would not be 22 until October.  Pesceone called the college, got the info confirmed, and that was the end of it.

This is new to me. I am surprised this story has not surfaced prior to this time, especially given the corps involved. There were times when there was mutual respect between 27th, North Star, BAC, Garfield, and Bridgemen, but the rivalries could be fierce too and at times got ugly. What I do recall is at the beginning of the season, it was speculated Garfield would not finish the season. How widespread the speculation was I can’t say. It was Pre-internet and knowing me at the time, if you sounded like you knew what you were talking about, I believed you (1980 was the summer between junior and senior year in high school). North Star seemed to be in good shape. As the season progressed, Garfield made huge strides, made finals, whereas North Star while not exactly plateauing, did lose steam.

The Eastern MA and CYO circuits held their finals a week after DCI finals. DCI finals was always the hot topic in the stands with heated debates. The biggest discussion was whether 27th was robbed, but I seem to recall some discussion of North Star coming close to not making finals. It was 40 years ago so I don’t remember specifics. Maybe a disqualification could have helped If Blue Stars had edged out North Star.

There was a 5 corps battle for the last 3 spots in DCI finals.....Garfield, Guardsmen, North Star, Blue Stars, and Troopers.  All were good, so it was up in the air.   I was on staff at Cadets....we had 18 brass in May, and 56 when the season started...........a successful recruiting trip to Mississippi and Louisiana answered our prayers.  The kids that came were both talented and hard working.  It was a miracle.  We did fill a few blanks mid-season, and one of them was the horn player who's age was challenged.  He did look old, and he also had played with a DCA corps for a few years.  North Star beat us by 15 points at the season opener.....we defeated them solidly at DCI prelims/finals.

I can't remember: when did George Hopkins become corps director? I know it was in the late 70s or early 80s, but not the precise year.

1982............he was on the percussion staff starting in 1979..............

Thanks. Couldn't find that on Cadets' web page, which is understandable, but I was surprised it wasn't noted on the Wikipedia page for Cadets, either, not even in pre-2018 iterations.

They contacted the accused member's college office, and they confirmed his DOB. They found the birth certificates a bit later in the day.

I was thinking drivers license but who had pictures on license then. Lol was thrown out of a couple of beer distributors in college cuz I didn’t look 21. “Yeah kid, can’t tell if this is you or not so.... beat it”.
