Happy Birthday Charlie Parker

Recommended Posts

Today is Charlie Parker's 100th birthday. What better way to celebrate one of the most creative minds in 20th century music than by pulling out the old CDs or videos of the '91 Blue Devils and their amazing Conversations in Jazz show.

As if you needed an excuse to bathe in the sound of one of the finest brass line DCI ever fielded.

Re Bird and the Blue Devils:

"Bird and Bela in Bb" was composed by Don Sebesky, and though it references and honors Charlie Parker in a stylistic way, the piece does not include any of his music.

Bird did compose "Blues for Alice" (Bluecoats '94), "Straight, No Chaser" (Les Senateurs '97) and "Yardbird Suite" (Canadian Knights '86)

I have always found it ironic that, despite the title, the corps played it on G brass instruments (of course) in 1991. Maybe it's time for a re-visit.

IIRC, they did touch on it in 2012.

More recently, Bluecoats used it in 2018.
