💯.  Why does everyone think they need to reinvent the wheel when that wheel was rolling along just fine?

Exactly Terry. I am guilty of that too, and just happy to see them looking and sounding so great as they should, you know ? Being phantom Regiments.

Okay. I’m going to start by saying I’m so excited to have drum corps back and I can’t wait for Lisle and Indy. I would also like to say job well done to the members of Phantom Regiment.
Now for the BUT…I’m not going to lie and say that I’m not disappointed in the design team. I understand the praises on here many are giving and I agree that any corps fielding a show are deserving. Watching the show I feel it was a huge miss by the design team. What I saw and heard was a product that was from the early 2000’s. The show design if judged would’ve kept Phantom in the 10-12 range if lucky. This year if any would’ve been the year for the Phantom staff to take some risks and instead they gave us another throwback show.

I saw people commenting on the lack of audience response and I think it was more a reflection of the lack of emotion from the design. Not everyone are die hard fans who find this show sentimental thus creating an emotional response. The props also did absolutely nothing for the design and were sloppy and burdensome. For me personally if this wasn’t a musical book that I had loved from 2003 and hearing for the first time I would be concerned from a adjudication stand point. I’m so very happy drum corps is back but for me the jury is still out on the Phantom design staff. Good luck and be safe everyone.

Every corps this year in my eye gets a pass from armchair judgement. Calling Indy a Celebration is the perfect word for it.

Thank you for your opinion. We all have them.

The product you are witnessing from the early 2000's was when the current membership was either in their diapers or not even thought of in the minds of their parents.   Whomever is in charge of instruction at Phantom (and there are many), have enabled these adults to buy into and portray what this show was meant to portray.

Almost all of us remember this show.  It was JD's 2nd year with the corps.  It was Paul R's first year with the corps.  It was Phantom's first foray into B-flat instrumentation.  It was also their return to white uniforms after the tan era.

I remember the member journal they had online that year and the excitement the members conveyed as being part of something just so special. I remember one show when they tied the Cadets and the members were thrilled.

What I see is special, if not even more special.  IMO it is even more special because after being through hell, through a cancelled season, having not been able to meet to even create a show, we have young people getting together.  They have a sound that is just so respective of the Phantom Regiment that we want to hear.

Every single person of this organization put this together.   Every.single.person.

I totally understand and agree with much of your viewpoint. And a lot of it supports my concerns as well. I loved this show in 2003, competitively it wouldn’t hold in 2021. This corps has been having design issues over the past several seasons and I just wish the staff would’ve pushed themselves into 2022. now would’ve been a perfect time to experiment and push boundaries. There are several corps this summer doing exactly that. I just wish Phantom was one of them. All the corps out there have been thru the hell that was 2020 but only Phantoms design team has basically decided to regurgitate a show design from almost 20 years ago. And that’s why I’m disappointed. Nothing to do with the members.

with 3 of the top four MIA this season IF it were being judged maybe it would place 6th-8th; JMO; but we are not judging; great job regiment!

What I see makes me happy and very confident that Phantom in 2022 will be a force.  Such.a.force.

We are so fortunate to witness corps on the field this year.  It's the end of July.  Even a few months ago I would have been skeptical.

Needless to say…those three,if attending would’ve placed ahead of them. And once again great job Phantom!!!! Design team, not so much.

I hear you, but my philosophy is this: if I'm a designer, I'm not using any of my good ideas in 2021. For a top six corps, I'm giving the students enough to keep their chops up and future students enough to stay interested. For a corps that was in an unfamiliar 12th place spot during the last competitive season, I'm giving the students something to build upon for when the next competitive season occurs. As such, I don't think they should take any risks at all - take all the risks possible next season when it "counts" (if competition is what indeed counts). Also, this is a young group, and in an environment where the design staff may not understand what risks they can handle (e.g., I don't think they actually held in-person camps until this summer).

Would I be happy with this design if this was a competitive season? No.

I will agree with the props, though. While I'm not sure they're sloppy and burdensome, I definitely don't understand what they add to the show. And I wasn't compelled by Adam Sage's description of them in one of the Regiment videos on facebook.
