So great to hear Phantom's brass back!  As for Boston, although hard to tell, given the lousy audio quality, their book seems rather dark, and not that well arranged. But, we'll have to wait till Detroit to get a better measure of the show.

I agree Boston is a hard read for me. It is very dark and it doesn't do anything for me musically.  Listening to Phantom really got me excited to see them on the field.

I think I set a personal record for the number of Likes dished out on this thread.

VERY mature brass sound (and that's coming from a drummer.) Loved the ballad and I found myself trying to figure out where the kick stop and the chevron would fall in that closing minute. Great stuff!

On a side note, do the snares look "short" or am I just getting old. They almost look like 10×14's to me and the sound was getting swallowed up in some spots.

My first impression upon hearing them was PHANTOM IS BACK! I agree completely, the sound from the hornline sounds very mature, in both performance and warm-ups. I think JD and the brass staff have elevated the hornline to such a place where they are well ahead of their early season progression curve, when compared to the years in recent memory.

Can't wait to see the show on the field, and plan for those special Regiment moves/visuals in the show throughout the season!

I listen to both performances I prefer phantoms over Boston’s at this point and will probably  feel the same come August.

One thing I will point out is, is phantoms musical book complex enough to compete with The big boys? Because it sounded like Boston’s book is far more technical at this point.

That’s exactly what makes me question a lot of the people now saying that Phantom could break top 5 in brass this year. They do sound very good. That is not a problem in the slightest. But what happens when you compare the complexity of what they are doing to that of Boston, Crown, BD, etc. that are the corps “ahead” of them later on in the season after some cleaning is done? I’m certainly thrilled to see Phantom back on the rise, but difficulty is something that could hinder higher placements down the stretch. Their musicality however is very strong. That will certainly be a large strength to the group this season.

Somewhat.  The devil is in what they are doing...how MUCH are they playing.  Phantom is giving us a complete musical picture with what seems a LOT of play time.  It will be interesting to time how much playing is going on vs not playing.  Because, being honest playing MORE is always harder than playing less, especially when moving.  Add also what chords are being played as well?  Playing unisons (even complex ones) are actually easier.  Couple that with movement (aka marching or sprinting) what is difficult?

At this point in the season, the only thing that is clear is they are much improved and people are saying very positive things about them.
