phd-student-TTU
wasn’t cavies culture about giving rookies hell to see if they could make it thru the year or that’s what was said back in the early ‘00 when I knew people marching there.

And if they don’t make it through the year, that helps… how? Just never got that fraternity type “we treat you like crap, then you’re one of the family”. Roommate was veteran and he quit pledging because “I spent 3 years taking orders in the Army and that was for a purpose. Why do the same #### thing just so some wet behind the ears ####### can get his jollies” Why don’t we just be honest and call it bullying. Become a "Beta" (Beta,Theta,Pi). When they pledged, they spent all their time on their pledge duties. Forget classes. They all made it. But 3 out of 5 of them flunked out at the end of their Freshman year. My roommate pledged after that. He came back from pledge meetings bloody and covered in all kinds of crap (sometimes literal crap). He made it, but quit the Frat in his Junior year. He said he had had enough of making people "prove themselves worthy" of being a member.

Got to know a bunch and most mature group I ever knew on campus. Being in a Senior corps since I was 16 gave me a taste of being around adults too so I kind of fit in. IOW we had a different outlook on what was important. No pledging as they figured serving in uniform was the hazing.
