And the floodgates are opening

Blue Devils have a pretty comprehensive youth protection policy and "safe space" policy, so I would hope that their response would be appropriate in relation to whatever has been reported.  Likewise, I would hope that the public reaction would be appropriate in the event that they mishandled whatever was reported to them.

I wouldn't put the 2000 incident on the same level as sexual abuse.  I was in the stadium that night, and most folks assumed that he was late getting to the field because of an equipment issue or some legitimate problem.  Very few people knew he had been kicked out the night before.  It wasn't until weeks/months later that the real story started to trickle out via RAMD and other means.  Interesting enough, I believe he was met by security and law enforcement after exiting the field after the show... which would hopefully preface how BD would react in a more serious situation.

Scojo did a podcast in the last year where it came up. He said staff didn't catch him on the field at first, but when they realized it, Gibbs and others were on their way to get him the second the performance was over.

They can remove those comments any time they want.  So I can only assume it’s acceptable to them.

Serious question: what can the fans do? Especially when there is such pushback from corps “supporters” who literally go after anyone who reports or agrees with the reporter. (Thinking of SoA FB comments)

I’d say clean out DCI “leaders” and put in people who do not have conflict of interest when punishing corps. CoI is DCI hurt $$$ when they punish corps. And will any corps leader push for a hard penalty without thinking “if my corps is next will payback be a b-word”. No wonder “punishment” is probation

Fans can write letters, send e-mails, call offices of DCI org in Indy and all individual corps offices and demand to know what is going on with corps discipline, legal actions, staff dismissals, all of it.  Make it public.  If the bad behaviors stay anonymous, stays quiet, is minimally penalized, then it continues.
But if there is a constant threat of exposure that could impact funding, donations, volunteers, offenders and their enablers livelihoods, things will start to change, improve. All levels of DCI (Indy & corps) will take action.  Probation is a joke.  It should be indefinite suspension from participation in any DCI event for a corps and any staff member (ANY staff member) including going to another DCI sanctioned corps.  It seems that punishment currently is toothless.  It’s the difference of police in the US saying “stop or I’ll shoot” and in the UK saying “stop or I’ll say stop again”. (I borrowed that line btw.) Fans who are aware of these incidents can do something.  A question is, how many fans are aware of all this?

Please let me know as I’ve gotten a lot older and well….I remember the line but not certain of its origin.  But I’ll guess from GC.

I know that Robin Williams said it in An Evening at the Met but I'm pretty sure the Monty Python troop also borrowed it a few times.

All of that being said, I don't think that changes can really happen at DCI until changes happen at the individual corps level. The member corps will still control the general direction that DCI takes it seems. The change, IMHO, has to start at the bottom and trickle up instead of down.

The issue that I see has been stated many times by myself as well as others. The member corps that do not currently have an issue (let's not forget that there are some VERY well run organizations out there,) do not KNOW that they have an issue or have not been CAUGHT with an issue are all stuck in a "Not my monkey, not my circus" mentality. The blinders are on and why make a change if YOU don't have a problem. Let them eat cake after all.....

SoA handled it horribly. Why? Because for decades they have been riding a wave trying to not get caught which seems to be a much easier thing to do than actually handling the issues. As log as people don't come forward and you foster an atmosphere of family means more than safety, this is the sort of thing that is going to happen. Like you all, I am tired, disappointed and angry. But I am also hopeful that with enough outcry, especially from parents and survivors, the corps will HAVE to at least acknowledge that there is an overall problem in the activity. It may not be in YOUR corps, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Don't forget that there are standing allegations on Reddit against 4 DCI Corps.  So far as I can determine there has been no response by DCI or the Corps themselves.

Note to DCI - the 'problem' didn't go away w/ SoA.

I posted something from Reddit about a member being blackmailed.  Is this what we do to members?  JHC.
