If the DCI organization went away???

Recommended Posts

…. How would it affect the individual corps?

For you Marvel comics fans, gonna play “What If?”

What If? DCI got clobbered with a major lawsuit that zeroed out the books. Or What If? The board decided to disband the organization.

How would it affect the individual corps in both WC and OC? IOW time for the alternate history

If Drum Corps would continue at all it would just re- org. Gone are the days of the local support groups, So before any one says go back to whatever, IMO that would never happen . Corps formed DCI to decide their own path and IF it were to continue would do the same.

If DCI went away, someone or group with $$$ should consider the NFL model. Corps would freak out over loss of control until they might later experience a bit of liberation to focus more on what they can do best - develop and manage their corps to educate and perform.

To start, there are a number of organizations who are singularly focused on operating a DCI participating corps.  In the event of a disruption of that magnitude, most of those corps would cease to exist.  Say goodbye to a dozen of those OC corps, and several of the WC corps.

In contrast, there are other DCI participants whose underlying organizations operate multiple programs (drum corps, winter guards, drumlines that perform at sporting events, dance classes, a nationwide marching band circuit, etc.).  Most of those organizations would persist, but whether their drum corps programs remain in operation would depend on what alternative performance venues are available to them.  If something similar manifests (i.e. G7, Varsity, WGI, Music for All, or a group of ex-DCI employees creating a new summer touring circuit), these corps may continue operating in their current forms.  If not, the options may not be palatable to everyone (i.e. WGI Winds, marching band clinics, summer marching band events).  And none of these options provide the combination of available time, competitive motivation, and financial opportunity that generate the level of excellence (and interest) of contemporary junior drum corps.

I think an organization such as WGI, USBands, or Varsity would probably take it over?  I would think Varsity would jump on it & make it profitable for their company? (Selfish reasons?)  Now would all of the member corps want to operate under their umbrella?  Probably not?

I'm all questions? 🤔

I think a key component will be whether and how new organizations can be insulated from liabilities for the actions of their predecessors, and here I am defining predecessors in potentially every possible relevant way (continuity of business entity, of board members, of staff, of affiliations, of members, etc.  I have no idea how all that works but it seems critical.

Sorry, I know I promised to stop existing, but I was already wondering the same things and this seems too important not to discuss.

Roman Blenski would fire up the Winnebago, round up the old DCM cones, and ride onto the scene in a cloud of dust/smoke to announce the launch of a new organization that would be succeed DCI and be "better every day".
