I remember marching there (at DCI Midwest 1978), and at prelims, the mosquitos were unbelievable.  They sprayed the field between prelims and finals, and that did help.

It’s because there’s a swamp under that bridge you cross over to the parking by the trees.  I must have gotten 20 mosquito bites walking to the car.  With OFF.  I ate mosquitoes when I marched there.  They’d fly into your mouth. Protein.

Try the field in LaCrosse in the ‘70s. Swampfest!

I bet they really gum up the horn valves after a performace too.

The trees behind the back stands that were 2 feet tall in the early to mid 70s are quite a bit taller now.

The first year, we had to go down steps on the other side of the end zone to get to the field because for some ungodly reason, we couldn’t come on from the gate where they do now.  I was only 14 and even I thought it was really dumb.

Interesting article about mosquitoes: avoid "red".  Corps & fans should wear the colors green, blue, or purple at the Whitewater venue. 😁

Raise your hand if you still have a Purple Lancers t-shirt.

That explains some things....our capes (1978 Crossmen) were long and RED (lined in white)....no wonder the mosquitos declared war on us in prelims......lol.....
