BandoDad
Are background checks required of volunteers / unpaid help in Open Class? What are the guidelines in regards to individuals who are not technically on staff but, as they put it "help out when they can?"
MikeN
I want to say yes. I know we at Guardians did, and IIRC, DCI put it in as a requirement? Ours cost you about $20 and was good for a year. Mike

All responsible organizations will be requiring background checks for anyone coming into contact with members or performers. Most corps, guards, and bands already have these policies in place. If you have questions about particular groups, check their websites and/or contact their management directly. That said, these policies may be a bit of an overreach at times, e.g., requiring background checks for all adjudicators, tabulators, announcers,...etc., despite the fact that they'll never come within several yards of a performer at any time. That resembles a legal restraining order. The border line for this is a bit fuzzy. Is it necessary to background check the mom who sells the tickets or serves the nachos? Still, it all comes down to liability, essentially an insurance issue. C'est la vie in this day and age.
BandoDad
Thank you for putting my mind at ease. The corps has a reputation for producing great guards and I can assume they wouldn't tarnish that by not background checking their cg techs. totaleefree
I believe the policy is if you spend more than 8 hours in contact with the members. So if you came out one day to work the food truck you would be OK w/o a background check. but you would need it for the second day. It is good to have it regardless just to be safe for you and the corps.

If your organization has members under age 18, all adults who 'may" have unsupervised one on one contact with a member or members must be checked. This could be around the food truck, loading unloading equipment, or even a bathroom or shower area. Drivers and volunteers fall under the required background check policy.
