For those who may not remember or who joined in the last three years, I keep careful day-by-day statistics of show results and compare how things are going today to how they went on the same relative day of competition last year (or in this case, in 2019). Does it mean much? Probably not. Does it give us something to ponder as the season moves along? Absolutely! I will be traveling quite a bit early in the season including stops at two west coast shows (Camas, WA and Stanford, CA) so my posting schedule may be a bit delayed from time to time, but I'm excited to be back! June 25 Run-Down The season opened on the West Coast for the first year in awhile so the year over year comparisons for first day of season don't align this time around. My analysis always compares relative day of the season. So 6/24/22 aligns with 6/21/19 - the first Friday of the competition season. This allows the regional Saturdays and Indy to line up for direct comparisons that matter more later in the season. Santa Clara Vanguard is on top, same as this time in 2019, although that year included head-to-head competition with Blue Devils. We don't have to wait long to answer that mystery as Blue Devils will join these seven corps in competition tonight. Year over year scores are down for the four corps with comparisons to make. Mandarins is down the least (-1.80) followed by SCV (-2.40), then Golden Empire (-2.90), and The Academy down furthest (-3.15). DrumCorpsRadio Posted June 26, 2022 Author Share Posted June 26, 2022 June 26 Run-Down Blue Devils joined the competition circuit and won the show by 1.400 points over Santa Clara Vanguard. Impulse saw the biggest score increase from Friday to Saturday (+3.550 points). Pacific Crest was the only corps to see a decrease. (-0.400). A developing storyline to watch is the gap between Pacific Crest and Gold. When the two corps first saw each other in 2019 (June 28), Pacific Crest led by 7.200 points. Less than 3 points separate the two corps now. The other big question regarding Gold's strong debut is where the corps stacks up against Blue Devils B and Vanguard Cadets. We won't get an answer to that question until July 8th when the corps meet up in Sacramento. Gold completed a strong first weekend with the greatest score increase of the night (+1.750) to draw within two points of Pacific Crest. With two and three shows under their belts, this first group of competing corps established pretty solid relative placements without much in the way of movement. We now go nearly a week until any of these corps return to competition and even longer in the case of Mandarins and the Open Class corps. So instead our attention shifts to Detroit where Blue Stars, Bluecoats, Boston Crusaders, The Cavaliers, Crossmen, and Phantom Regiment debut on June 28th with the theater broadcast. All six of these corps were finalists in 2019 so this head to head match-up will give us a good sense of things. After Tuesday, the only 2019 finalists left to debut will be Carolina Crown (July 1) and The Cadets (July 2). 2019: 2 - Bluecoats 5 - The Cavaliers 6 - Boston Crusaders 8 - Blue Stars 11 - Crossmen 12 - Phantom Regiment 4 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Some notes on the emerging storylines: Boston Crusaders and The Cavaliers did not meet head to head in 2019 until July 14th. At that show, Boston led by exactly 2 points. This year, the spread is 1.850. In 2019, The Cavaliers eventually edged Boston for the Top 5. Phantom Regiment appears to be in a different grouping this year. This time two years ago, Blue Stars edged Phantom Regiment by almost 3.5 points. Last night, Phantom Regiment won by 0.600 points. This suggests that Phantom will not be in too many conversations about whether they make finals like they were a couple of years back. While it is of course too soon to make comparisons from one set of shows to another, that's what this thread is all about! Mandarins have to be happy seeing their score in the Top 5 right now. Even with additional corps to come, it seems unlikely that Mandarins initial ranking is so far off that we should be expecting anything other than another finals appearance. Carolina Crown debuted in the #2 position with a score of 73.450. Colts begin in the #12 position with a score of 62.350. There is a significant decrease in scores in 2022 relative to 2019. Here are the differences from then to now for the corps that competed on the equivalent dates in the two years. Crossmen = -6.650 The Cavaliers = -4.600 Blue Stars = -4.400 Colts = -3.850 Carolina Crown = -2.600 Phantom Regiment = +0.450 The only 2019 finalists yet to compete are Blue Knights and The Cadets. Both corps are in action tonight. In addition, several other World Class corps compete for the first time: Jersey Surf, Madison Scouts, Music City. On the Open Class side of things, there are also several debuts: 7th Regiment, Colt Cadets, River City Rhythm, and Spartans. With four shows and all of these first performances, there is a lot to learn from what happens tonight: In Arizona, the additon of Blue Knights should tell us a little something about where the corps stands relative to the perennial West Coast powerhouses. In Massachusetts, Boston Crusaders is the lone corps with experience so far in this new season. The biggest question will be where The Cadets place relative to Boston Crusaders. We'll be able to use the relative placing of Boston Crusaders in Detroit to get a general sense of which grouping The Cadets appear to be in, at least initially. This will also be the first opportunity to see how strong Spartans appear to be as they prepare to defend their 2019 Open Class championship. In Ohio, the main story will be Bluecoats vs. Carolina Crown. Both corps have won the single show in which they have competed. In Wisconsin, it's the first competitive appearance of an all-gender Madison Scouts corps. With several World Class corps in competition, this show will give a sense of which corps may be on the cusp of finals this year. They are also the corps with the two highest scores followed closely by Santa Clara Vanguard and Bluecoats. Colts (+3.500) and Boston Crusaders (+3.450) saw the greatest score increases since their last competitions. Only The Academy (-0.150) decreased in score from its previous performance. In terms of corps' debuts: The Cadets open the season in the #8 spot and Blue Knights in #11. Madison Scouts begin in #13 with Jersey Surf rounding out the World Class corps starting off their seasons last night in #19. Spartans had a strong initial showing, including a head-to-head win over Jersey Surf, good for #18 in the rankings. River City Rhythm, Colt Cadets, and 7th Regiment all had their first shows as well. Just two World Class corps are yet to have their first shows - Genesis (7/3) and Troopers (7/8). In Massachusetts, Boston Crusaders is the lone corps with experience so far in this new season. The biggest question will be where The Cadets place relative to Boston Crusaders. We'll be able to use the relative placing of Boston Crusaders in Detroit to get a general sense of which grouping The Cadets appear to be in, at least initially. Given the two corps were head-to-head twice in three days, this opens up some questions about the two corps' relative positioning. For sure, the move of Crossmen to #9 is only temporary given the corps listed as 10-12 were not in action. Similarly Boston Crusaders continues to make a case for consideration as a medal contender this year yet the #2 position in today's run-down is mostly a product of the other top corps being off last night. The exact same situation occurrred back in 2019 over the first few days of July as you will see over the next few days. Impressive nonetheless. Looking ahead, there are no shows tonight and only one show in California tomorrow. Mandarins will be back in action for the first time in over a week so it will be good to see how the rehearsal time affects that corps' placement, especially relative to Blue Knights. Blue Devils B, Blue Devils C, and Vanguard Cadets all make their season debuts as well, which should provide a glimpse into the Open Class championship race although we'll have to wait a few more days to see Gold in that mix. One other programming note -- my records showed Genesis in a series of shows beginning July 3rd. That must have changed at some point because the DCI calendar and the corps' website now show the first competition on July 16th.
