WC means you get appearance money, priority in scheduling and housing, and access to a lot more support. In return, you are guaranteeing you can handle appearing all over a national tour (30+ shows generally) during the 8-9 week season, that you have not only finances in place to cover that, but reserves at a certain level, that you're providing "world class" health and safety, meals, transportation and other member support, and that your committing to having a stake in the whole. I've been in the room - there just aren't any OC's currently that are built to handle that. WC gets a lot, but in return they give a lot. Crown spends more on health and safety staff alone than some OC's spend on food all summer. OC places a lot more of the burden on each individual org, but also lets them tailor their tour experience way more to their liking. Mike And to put a little data behind that. In our last pre-COVID season, the World Class corps with the fewest appearance (not including championships events) was Jersey Surf at 20 shows. Things have changed now, but it's unclear if those changes are permanent. This year, Jersey Surf has 14 shows while three Open Class corps exceed that (Colt Cadets - 17, Gold - 15, River City Rhythm - 15).
Phantom56
I agree-DCI should just have one class, and pay appearance fees to all corps. SCV Cadets, Spartans and BD2 are often more entertaining than some of the World class corps.

Mike I read DCI's "Policies and Procedures " Policy 216. To call this policy "vague" is an understatement, including number of performances. If you're correct about WC requiring being out for a 8-9 week tour, with 30+ performances, there seem to be several corps, Jersey Surf among others that aren't meeting WC requirements. If WC can have "floating" rules, then just having one class levels the playing field.

Well ya have to get 20-21 corps to agree to that vote for it. you have a better chance of getting alumni to agree to go an entire year without complaining about something

KVG_DC
oh entirely. my comment was more on the selection of that particular phenomenon as your metaphoric go to.
BlueStainGlass
I saw a post yesterday by Sal Salas that was empty stands at intermission of an Open Class show. DCI needs to find a better model to get these groups exposure so they can recruit. 4 open class groups aren't going to bring in a crowd compared to 4 world with 2 open.
