In short it’s about money, and funding available for all inclusive groups versus less inclusive groups. How much money can we really be talking about? And is that money really worth it? We’re talking 90+ years of history/tradition.

Are there Code requirements, including OSHA that props have to comply with ? 2. Do prop designs require plans signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer or Licensed Architect ? 3. Do the prop designers have to provide instructions for assembling, dissembling, transporting and maintaining props. 4.Do corps have to keep any type of log concerning prop maintenance, repairs, etc. ? 5.Do prop designers and fabricators have to carry Liability Insurance in case a prop fails ? Looking at some of the props used for shows like "downside up" and this years Mandarins, there's a lot of potential liability if a kid get hurt, in a fall. Or if a prop fails due to design or error in assembly ,disassembly or maintenance. Drum corps has no restrictions on these things. It’s not like bringing a show into Madison Square Garden or Baltimores Hippodrome. Those shows all have stamped engineering docs they bring with them. band and drum corps props are the wild west. And yes, I cringe quite a bit when I see common painter scaffold used on fields. Or shoddy aluminum welds. 1/2” ply used instead of 3/4”. i write specs for entertainment gear, much of which holds thousands of tons of gear over your head at a concert. I’m not an engineer, but we have ETCP certification for systems designers in entertainment, which we then Send drawings to licensed engineers to get drawings stamped. I’ve already over engineering my gear using a pretty hefty design factor depending on the purpose of the equipment. I also advice on the steel used to build entertainment spaces. See again, over engineered design factor. now keep in mind, any venue has the right to inspect a performers gear or ask for engineering drawings. Because when something fails (indiana state fair, hard rock stadium, Mandalay Bay… ) EVERYONE gets named in the lawsuit. Everyone. The venue, the performer, presenter, production company, sponsor, etc etc etc. Some do ask for drawings in their rental agreement, some do not. If it’s a show with overhead rigging, drawings are always asked to be sent ahead for review by the dept heads of that venue. One, to make sure the venue can support whatever is coming in and being suspended from it, and Two so that they can plan for local stagehands and schedules. And if the drawings don’t have a stamp, that component cannot be brought in. It’s often dictated by the venues insurance.

We’re talking 90+ years of history/tradition. From what I gather, it’s quite a bit. This is a slippery slope, and I’m not going down the rabbit hole again on this so I’ll put this out there. Tradition for traditions sake is not helpful in my opinion. “We’ve always done it that way” usually leads to complacency. With gender fluidity as it is in 2022, or even what it was in 2000, it wasn’t all male technically then. So just rip the band aid off and be done. And competitively how were they better this year??? How?? Don’t forget there was no Spirit of Atlanta to knock Madison down to 16th place and you had Academy that was hit with Covid right behind them. if you think the show design was better what does that have to be with being coed? That show could’ve been done with all males or all females. Edited August 16, 2022 by GREENBLUE
oldbandguy
Rumor has it that Jay Wise, one of the main driving forces of the Bloo Alumni Corps, will be leaving his middle school teaching job to coordinate the next alumni corps tasked with performing at DCI World Championships...but he won't come cheap!

If a 90 year old tradition is killing an org, it's past time to dump that tradition and make a new and better one.

Survival is more important than competitive success at this point for Madison. And going the "adding girls didn't help their placement" route in THE FIRST COMPETITIVE SEASON AFTER ADDING THEM completely misses the point of adding them. JFC....get a grip on reality, would you? 1

How bad was your ulcer after seeing '17 Bloo?? That #### ramp scared me all season, especially after that snare slipped in the first show run. I was terrified until the last tuba safely made it down at finals...and since they weren't winning, that meant no encore run to take another chance on. 2
Metalbinky
Pacific Crest changes. Glen Crosby resigned as Program Coordinator and Director of Percussion. Nicole Casino resigned as percussion co-caption head (replaced by David Ramirez filling in as acting co-caption head in July. The corps is searching for replacement for Program Coordinator to be filled by end of August, then searching for new percussion caption head.
