BD Performing Arts announces today that in 2023, Blue Devils B will be returning to their roots as a community-based program, with an eye on the future.

“Looking at our history, Blue Devils B began as a community ensemble with members primarily living in close proximity to Concord,” says John Meehan, Director of Community Arts Programs for BDPA. “Over time, the program has grown immensely, in so many positive ways, drawing members from all over California and many states across the country. In 2023, we look to affirm our mission, growing BDB as a prominent program within our local community. Look for amazing things in 2023, and beyond!”

Stay tuned for staff, show, and season schedule information to be released on October 18!

With the announcement of BDB "returning to their root" as a community based corps...how will this effect their touring schedule?  Will they still be heading to Marion and Indy?

Would be sad if both they and SCV Cadets are not there.

Neither went to Indy/Marion in 2019 either. I understand why, probably finances.

Not necessarily. I thought when BDB and SCVC would not be competing in Marion in 2019, it would kill any interest in Open Class but it turned out to be one of the more interesting years for Open Class. Spartans were undefeated going into the championships, Gold was pretty strong too, and Legends was nipping at the heals of both. People were paying attention to and talking about Open Class. While it is always interesting to see where BDB and SCVC end up in Indy, their absence an create more excitement for other OC corps.

Whether they compete in the OC championships without SCVC remains to be seen. We don’t know how long the hiatus will be for SCVC. If it’s for just a year, maybe not, but if it will be ongoing which could very well be the case, BDB will need to compete in Marion if it wants to attract talent since being in the B corps does not guarantee a spot in Blue Devils. Remember Gold defeated them in all but one meeting and Spartans will be more competitive next year.

Even with all the resources The Blue Devils organization has; they are making tough decisions to ensure the stability and future of what they offer. I'm sure this wasn't an easy decision to make, in addition to what SCV did with SCVC. Let's be honest, gang; things are challenging from the top down and nobody is immune from making tough choices to keep things going.

Am I imagining things, or wasn't something like this announced for both BDB and SCVC several years ago, perhaps planned for the 2020 season? I could swear that they were both going to only do California tours, so was surprised to see them at Indy after the restart.

I said something weeks ago that something like this would be happening to BDB. While not on hiatus my take is they will field a corp but only for local or CA performances. No national tours. Both BD and SCV have basically toured two 125 plus members on tours that for now is really cost consuming even for these two giants. White both BDB and SCVC are competitive corps in the open class they complement each other. It's unfortunate but maybe they will come back to full strength.

How does this impact Blue Devils C?  My understand was that having only local membership was their thing.   Perhaps the difference will be age of members over the 2 organizations?

BDC is smaller and has ALWAYS been a regional-only corps.   The only reason they went to DCI in 07 was because it was in Pasdena.

As for BDB...remember that they started in 1977, didn't go to DCI until 1991, and even that was an every other year thing.  They didn't start going every year until 2006.

SCVC very similar, starting in 1982, every other year to DCI starting in 1991,every year stafting in 2011.
